Ubese (language)

Ubese, alternatively referred to as Ubesian, was a language characterized by a rough, deep, and monotonous sound. Princess Leia Organa acquired Ubese proficiency through the use of Easy Ubese Phrase Book by Ebenn Q3 Baobab. She utilized this language when infiltrated Jabba the Hutt's palace on the planet Tatooine, disguised as the Ubese bounty hunter Boushh. The protocol droid C-3PO possessed fluency in Ubese and provided translation services for Jabba during conversations involving his disguised master, "Boushh."

Behind the scenes

Ubese initially made its debut appearance in the 1983 motion picture, Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi. While the language remained unnamed onscreen, its identification as Ubese originated within the subtitles of the 2006 Limited Edition version of the film, present in both remastered and original versions. Before that point, Ubese had been described in Expanded Universe materials (now known as Legends) and was referenced as Ubese by Ben Burtt in the Galactic Phrase Book & Travel Guide.

Burtt authored Leia/Boushh's Ubese dialogue, employing concise words to create the impression of a "terse" language, distinguishing it from the Huttese language also featured in that segment of the film. Pat Welsh, an experienced amateur actress recognized for her uniquely deep voice, provided the vocal performance. Welsh and Burtt had previously collaborated during the production of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, where she voiced the extraterrestrial title character. To generate the alien Ubese voice, Welsh's recorded performance underwent processing using a ring modulator, resulting in the introduction of an electronic textured effect derived from an oscillator tone.
