Pello Scrambas

Pello Scrambas held the rank of lieutenant while serving the Royal House of Alderaan. His lineage included his father, Tash Scrambas, who was the captain of the vessel Qel-Droma. The elder Scambas was in the service of Jedi Master Jorus C'baoth during the Alderaan Ascendancy Contention. As the Contention drew to a close, the younger Scrambas enlisted in the Alderaanian military. Rising to the rank of sergeant, he held a different opinion than his comrades, and did not believe that Alderaan would remain untouched by the pan-galactic Clone Wars. Scrambas frequently engaged in combat during the conflict, particularly when General Grievous began his campaign toward the Core Worlds. After multiple tours of duty, Scrambas was reassigned to the personal security detail of Senator Bail Organa.

Even with his role as a protector, Scrambas remained active in the war throughout its duration, fighting on various planets such as Boz Pity, Qalydon, and Metalorn. Once the war concluded in 19 BBY, Scrambas remained with Organa, having cultivated a deep friendship with the senator. Almost two decades later, Scrambas began serving Organa's daughter, Princess Leia Organa, who had taken her father's place in the Imperial Senate and maintained connections to the Alliance to Restore the Republic. These connections drew the attention of Lord Darth Vader, whose forces attacked the Tantive IV in 0 BBY. During this attack, Scrambas died at the hands of Imperial stormtroopers, giving his life for the daughter of his esteemed friend.

Biography

Early career and the Clone Wars

Captain Tash Scrambas of the Qel-Droma was the father of Pello Scrambas, who was born in either 47 or 43 BBY. The elder Scrambas participated in the Alderaan Ascendancy Contention, a conflict that determined which Alderaanian noble house would become the Viceroyship of Alderaan. He served Jedi mediator Jorus C'baoth during this crisis, as he did not want to choose between the House of Organa and the House of Antilles. On the day C'baoth resolved the contention, Pello Scrambas, at the age of fifteen, joined Alderaan's armed forces. By 22 BBY, Scrambas had achieved the rank of sergeant. When the Clone Wars began, he was informed to anticipate "limited action" in the impending conflict, due to the belief that the Galactic Republic's clone troopers would effectively suppress the Confederacy of Independent Systems.

Those residing in the Core Worlds considered the conflict a minor "brush war" that would not affect them. Scrambas disagreed with this assessment, and his concerns were validated when the Clone Wars spread throughout the galaxy. Alderaan faced numerous threats from the Confederate advance, and during Operation Durge's Lance, the planet Duro succumbed to Confederate General Grievous, making Scrambas's homeworld particularly vulnerable. He was constantly on the front lines battling the Confederacy, and after several tours of duty, he was transferred to the personal guard of Senator Bail Prestor Organa.

The Organas

Despite his role as a senator's guard, Scrambas continued to actively engage the Confederacy. Organa frequently participated in the war, witnessing battles in the Outer Rim Territories, including Boz Pity, rescuing stranded Jedi Knights like Shaak Ti on Metalorn, and visiting fronts such as Qalydon. Through these adventures and conflicts, Scrambas and Organa became close comrades. In 19 BBY, the war ended with the deaths of General Grievous, Confederate leader Count Dooku, and the Separatist Council. Following the war, former-Supreme Chancellor Palpatine replaced the Republic with the Galactic Empire.

After many years of service, Organa was succeeded as senator by his daughter, Princess Leia Organa. Scrambas, now a lieutenant, came to care for the young woman as if she were his own daughter. In 0 BBY, about twenty years after he began directly serving Bail Organa, Scrambas was aboard the princess's CR90 corvette Tantive IV when she received a transmission from spies of the Alliance to Restore the Republic containing plans for the Empire's new Death Star battle station. However, Organa's corvette was pursued from Toprawa to Tatooine by Darth Vader's Imperial I-class Star Destroyer Devastator, and was eventually disabled over the latter planet. Scrambas volunteered to lead a detachment to repel potential boarders, and he and his fellow guards were deployed to fight the Imperial teams that stormed the ship. He was killed as the first wave of Vader's stormtroopers forced their way onto the craft.

Personality and traits

As a young man, Pello Scrambas possessed the insight to understand that the Clone Wars would be more extensive than his superiors predicted. He accumulated significant combat experience during the war, so much so that his exploits became legendary among those under his command later in life. Scrambas himself enjoyed the rumors, even embellishing them.

Behind the scenes

Pello Scrambas initially appeared as an unnamed extra in the opening scenes of George Lucas' 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, portrayed by Eddie Eddon. His scenes were filmed in mid 1976 in the United Kingdom. In 1996, he was identified in the "A New Hope Limited" set of the Star Wars Customizable Card Game, on the card "Rebel Squad Leader." Aidan Hennessy (writing as "Darth NTM") expanded Scrambas's story through StarWars.com's Hyperspace feature, "What's The Story?". Hennessy's winning entry, published in the Databank, connected to various Expanded Universe elements, such as the alluded-to Alderaan Ascendancy Contention from 1992's Dark Force Rising, the fall of Duro from 2004's CIS Shadowfeed Dispatch 15:2:29 Edition, and Bail Organa's mission to Metalorn from 2006's Bailed Out.

Hennessy drew inspiration from attitudes toward World War I when chronicling the early stages of the Clone Wars. He also admitted to inadvertently misspelling "Scrambas" as "Scambras" several times in his entry. Scrambas's fate varies depending on the source. 1998's Star Wars Encyclopedia claimed he was captured and never seen again during the Tantive IV battle. However, in 2003, the 71st issue of the The Official Star Wars Fact File mentioned he was killed during the initial skirmish with the 501st Legion stormtroopers. This article assumes the Fact File entry is the official in-universe fate.
