Starkiller Base enveloped in a planetary shield
Generators for planetary shields created large deflector shields that were also known as planetary shields, and these were built to safeguard entire planets. The Galactic Empire employed these shields to defend critical military sites, such as the security complex located on Scarif. Similarly, the First Order utilized them to protect Starkiller Base, which served as both their operational headquarters and a superweapon.
Planets could be entirely enclosed by planetary shields, which functioned as substantial deflector shields. These shields, crafted to defend vital installations from hostile actions, were impenetrable to starship fire and proton torpedoes. However, they offered no protection against superlasers like the one employed by the Death Star. In the case of Scarif, an orbital Shield Gate was implemented to establish an opening for spacecraft passage. The power of planetary shields was such that any starship colliding with one would suffer severe damage, if not outright destruction.
The atmosphere surrounding Starkiller Base was shielded by a planetary shield with a refresh rate that was not constant; this prevented any spacecraft moving slower than lightspeed from entering.
In the year 1 BBY, the Imperial Complex on Lothal was fortified with a shield. During the liberation of Lothal by the Lothal resistance group, the Rebels managed to seize control of both the complex and its shield. However, Grand Admiral Thrawn, commander of the Imperial Seventh Fleet's, had his operative, Rukh, deactivate the Dome's shield. Rukh, together with several technicians, successfully disabled the shield's generator, allowing the Chimaera to commence firing upon Capital City. Following the surrender of Lieutenant Commander Ezra Bridger to Thrawn, Captain Garazeb Orrelios engaged Rukh, while the other rebels neutralized the technicians. Subsequently, the rebels reactivated the shield, preventing the Chimaera from resuming its bombardment of the capital.

Near the conclusion of 1 BBY, the Rebel Alliance initiated an attack on Scarif, a planet under Imperial shield protection, aiming to procure the plans for the Death Star battle station. In the course of this battle, the Sphyrna-class Hammerhead corvette named Lightmaker propelled the incapacitated Star Destroyer Persecutor into Scarif's Shield Gate, consequently impacting the planetary shield itself. This action generated an opening, facilitating the transmission of the Death Star plans to the Rebel Fleet. Mere seconds afterward, the Death Star itself materialized, discharging a low-intensity superlaser blast onto the Imperial installation below, thereby completely obliterating the planetary shield.
Following the Galactic Empire's defeat in 5 ABY, remnants of the defeated regime sought refuge in the Unknown Regions to regroup. The nascent First Order commenced the construction of Starkiller Base, a superweapon crafted from a planet and fortified with a planetary shield. During their conflict with the First Order, the Resistance mounted an assault on the planet. They bypassed the shield by traveling at lightspeed aboard the Millennium Falcon, and successfully compelled one of the Order's leading officers to deactivate the deflector shield. This allowed the Resistance Starfighter Corps to target the base's thermal oscillator, ultimately resulting in the planet's destruction.
