Porg (bounty hunter)

A Trandoshan male bounty hunter known as Porg operated during the New Republic era. In the year 5 ABY, 8t88, a droid information broker, engaged Porg's services as additional muscle to eliminate Kyle Katarn, a former agent of the Rebel Alliance, should Katarn survive the initial attempts on his life by other hired guns at the cantina called Rimmer's Rest on the moon of Nar Shaddaa.

As it happened, Katarn successfully evaded 8t88's other operatives within the bar. After detaching one of 8t88's arms, he fled into the sewers, where he encountered Porg alongside an Aqualish bounty hunter. Porg launched an assault on Katarn wielding a vibro-ax, but he was swiftly rendered unable to fight. Attempting another attack, the Trandoshan inadvertently positioned himself directly in the line of fire between Katarn and the Aqualish, resulting in his simultaneous demise from blaster fire from both individuals.

Biography

Bounty on Nar Shaddaa

Porg ambushes Kyle Katarn.

Porg, a Trandoshan male, established himself as a bounty hunter operating on the moon of Nar Shaddaa during the New Republic period. In the year 5 ABY, 8t88, a droid who worked as an information broker, schemed to betray Kyle Katarn, a former Rebel Alliance agent, on Nar Shaddaa, unless Katarn conceded to the droid's stipulations. Anticipating Katarn's potential non-compliance, 8t88 contracted a group of bounty hunters and mercenaries, Porg included, as a backup contingency.

Accompanied by a Gran and another bounty hunter, 8t88 encountered Katarn at the cantina known as Rimmer's Rest. As 8t88 had foreseen, Katarn rejected the droid's demands, causing 8t88 to vacate the bar, leaving his associates to kill Katarn. However, Katarn made his escape and tracked 8t88 to a landing platform, where he opened fire on the droid, severing one of 8t88's arms. Despite this, the droid managed to escape aboard his Lambda-class shuttle, while the detached arm plummeted from the platform into the sewers below. The severed hand still clutched a datadisc, which was Katarn's objective.

A vibro-ax to grind

Porg, aiming to secure the datadisc before Katarn, located the arm in the sewers and concealed himself in the sewage. When Katarn retrieved 8t88's severed arm, Porg emerged from the muck brandishing a vibro-ax. Katarn remarked that he doubted the bounty hunter's advantage in bringing a vibro-ax to a blaster fight, inadvertently providing Porg with the opportunity to disarm Katarn of his own weapon. Porg attacked again, but his Human target deflected the blow using 8t88's arm and countered with a swift kick to the Trandoshan's groin, incapacitating him.

After Katarn recovered his Bryar blaster pistol, an Aqualish bounty hunter entered the sewers, searching for Porg after overhearing the brief altercation. Katarn attempted to shoot him, but the Aqualish's armor deflected the blaster bolt. The two exchanged fire, during which Porg regained consciousness. Unaware of the firefight, Porg sat up just as the Aqualish and Katarn fired their blasters at each other. Porg was fatally struck by both blasts, and his body fell back into the sewage. Taken aback by his accidental kill, the Aqualish was immediately shot in the head by Katarn, who ultimately evaded all of 8t88's men and departed Nar Shaddaa.

Personality and traits

Porg, a bounty hunter, expressed disapproval of Kyle Katarn's use of a ranged weapon against someone armed with a melee weapon, deeming it dishonorable. He was further incensed when Katarn attempted to evade a "righteous" killing blow from the vibro-ax. However, Porg took pride in his ax-swinging technique and believed his actions, along with his plan to kill Katarn in a single blow, exemplified a true warrior. The Trandoshan boasted about his skill with the ax and reveled in trapping Katarn while intending to cleave his target's head in two. Porg possessed yellow eyes, greenish-yellow scales, and the ability to speak Galactic Basic Standard.

Equipment

Porg wielded a vibro-ax during his confrontation with Kyle Katarn, asserting his proficiency in its use. He demonstrated this ability by disarming Katarn with the weapon but failed to land a killing blow in his subsequent attack, which Katarn managed to block. Porg adorned himself with silver body armor and a flowing red cape, along with bandoliers around his ankles.

Behind the scenes

Porg made his debut in the 1998 novella Dark Forces: Rebel Agent, penned by William C. Dietz. Ezra Tucker created the book's illustration of Porg. The character also appears in the novella's full-cast audio drama, featuring dialogue lines not present in the novella. While the audio adaptation doesn't specify the voice actor for Porg, Patrick Coyle, Tom Keith, Bill Slichter, and Tim Russell are all credited with voicing either a bounty hunter or "goon."

Inconsistencies

Discrepancies exist between the Dark Forces: Rebel Agent novella and audio drama, as well as the 2008 The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, concerning Porg's encounter with Kyle Katarn.

Porg's character entry in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia claims that the bounty hunter only intended to capture Katarn, contradicting the novella and audio drama, which clearly establish Porg's intent to kill Katarn. The entry also states that Porg was involved in a three-way battle with Katarn and the Aqualish, and that the Aqualish hunter deliberately shot Porg. However, Rebel Agent indicates that the Aqualish's shot was unintentional, leaving him stunned long enough for Katarn to kill him. This article prioritizes the Rebel Agent novella and audio drama as primary sources.

Another inconsistency arises between the Rebel Agent novella and audio drama regarding the timing of Katarn's retrieval of 8t88's arm. In the novella, Katarn acquires the arm and uses it in the subsequent fight against Porg. In the audio drama, Katarn spots the arm but is unable to retrieve it before Porg ambushes him; Katarn then grabs the arm after subduing Porg.
