Red Leader (Star Tours)

A Human male, identified by the call sign Red Leader, served as an X-wing starfighter pilot. He was in command of Red Squadron of the Alliance of Free Planets during a battle against the Galactic Empire. This conflict occurred over what was believed to be a third Death Star battle station.

In the midst of this conflict, Star Tours Flight 45 arrived, piloted by the pilot droid RX-24, aboard a StarSpeeder 3000. The New Republic pilot recognized the shuttle as belonging to the Star Tours travel company and reprimanded the droid for entering a restricted combat zone. Eventually, Red Squadron successfully reached the battlestation's thermal exhaust port, launching proton torpedos that resulted in the planetoid's destruction.

Red Leader and the Alliance were unaware that the supposed "Death Star III" was actually a worldcraft. This worldcraft had been modified by Ennix Devian, the self-proclaimed Imperial Supreme Commander, to resemble a Death Star. The true objective of the battle was to distract the Alliance while Devian's Kaarenth Dissension forces secretly stole warships from Alliance shipyards located in nearby star systems.

Behind the scenes

Steve Gawley behind the scenes as Red Leader

Steve Gawley (who was the model shop supervisor for ILM on the attraction) portrayed Red Leader. He appeared on the video screen inside the original Star Tours simulator. The helmet worn by Gawley seems identical to the one worn by Jek Porkins in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, as evidenced by the photo of the worn helmet prop in the book Star Wars Costumes: The Original Trilogy. Kasan Moor, a pilot featured in the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron video game, also sports the same helmet design.
