Rematching was a procedure where Chiss people, who were members of one Chiss family, officially switched their loyalty and membership to a different family. Each family had a restricted quantity of "appointment slots" each year, which capped the amount of new members they could take in. The majority of potential recruits were required to have discussions with the Councilors and frequently the Patriel of the family they wished to join, who were stationed on the recruit's planet. The Patriel and Councilors would forward their assessment to the family homestead, where it would be examined, and a decision made on whether to accept the potential recruit as a merit adoptive. Generally, this process spanned two to three months.
Generally, those who became part of a family via rematching would do so holding the status of merit adoptive. Merit adoptive was a temporary status that would be forfeited after the completion of one's military service if the individual did not first attain the rank of Trial-born by completing that family's Trials. In certain instances involving exceptionally talented potential recruits, certain families would grant the potential members the rank of Trial-born or even ranking distant. A Chiss who was admitted to a family with a rank equal to or higher than Trial-born would never be required to undergo the Trials.
Although rare, Chiss were permitted to undergo rematching on more than one occasion. Occasionally, Chiss families would try to encourage notable members of the Chiss Defense Force to become members by offering a higher family rank than the individual possessed within their current family.
