In the time leading up to the famous Battle of Yavin, specifically in 1 BBY, the Alliance to Restore the Republic initiated a rescue mission. This mission was designed to retrieve several Rebel pilots who had managed to break free from the Corporate Sector Authority's notorious Stars' End prison located on Mytus VII. Their escape was executed using the BFF-1 bulk freighter named Genue. The discovery of the prisoners' flight was swift, prompting the dispatch of a Delta-class DX-9 stormtrooper transport. Its mission was to intercept and search vessels in the vicinity of Kashyyyk, with the goal of recapturing the escaped individuals.
Upon learning of the breakout, the Rebel Alliance deployed Captain Keyan Farlander and Lieutenant Cardacs, a comrade of Raider, in R-22 Spearheads to spearhead a rescue operation. Farlander successfully destroyed the Imperial transport just before it could board the Genue. Subsequently, the Rebel Lambda-class T-4a shuttle Drago arrived and docked with the freighter, preparing to guide it to hyperspace. During this time, the two R-22s defended against waves of TIE fighter attacks launched from the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Intrepid. Tragically, Cardacs lost his life while safeguarding the boarding process.
Following their rescue, the escapees revealed to the Alliance the existence of Wookiee slaves. These Wookiees were being held by the Empire and forced to contribute to a secret project. In response, the recently freed Captain Samuel Raider led Red Squadron on a rescue mission aimed at liberating the enslaved Wookiees.
