This particular lightsaber, a Sith lightsaber, carried a dark reputation; tales circulated that any individual daring to wield it would succumb to insanity.
Palpatine's Desire
In the era of the Clone Wars, the Sith Lord known as Darth Sidious assigned General Grievous the mission of recovering the saber for his own purposes. However, Grievous was defeated by Maul, the former apprentice of Sidious. Upon Maul's return to Coruscant, the lightsaber malfunctioned and shattered during activation. Expressing his dissatisfaction, Sidious discarded his former apprentice through a window while retaining possession of the damaged saber.
Vaneé's Utilization
By 35 ABY, the saber found itself within the confines of Darth Vader's castle. Vaneé, with the intention of realizing the Prophecy of Mustafar, recounted the events of the past as Dean undertook the repair of the lightsaber.
