The Schism Imperial, also known as simply the Schism, represented a clandestine splinter group. This faction stood in opposition to Emperor Sheev Palpatine's reign, while simultaneously claiming loyalty to the Galactic Empire. Reportedly, the Schism posed the most substantial challenge to Palpatine's authority following the conclusion of the scourge of the droids. Sly Moore assumed the leadership role within the Schism, even as the Emperor's apprentice, Darth Vader, contemplated joining their ranks instead of destroying them. Coinciding with Vader's discovery of the Schism Imperial's machinations, Moore readied her fellow conspirators for action. Composed of traitors, the group faced the inherent risk of internal betrayal. The assault on Exegol marked the Schism Imperial and Vader's most daring defiance of Palpatine's rule.
Moore's apparent need for Vader was solely to facilitate the acquisition of kyber crystals from Exegol, after which she intended to betray and eliminate him. Simultaneously, she plotted the demise of Vader's son, the young Jedi Luke Skywalker, who presented himself as a potential alternative Sith apprentice for Palpatine. With both Vader and Skywalker eliminated, Moore saw an opportunity to ascend as Palpatine's new disciple under the Rule of Two, and by ruling alongside him, transform the Schism Imperial into the Empire itself. The complete truth, however, revealed that Moore and Palpatine had jointly conceived the Schism Imperial as a test for Vader, designed to reaffirm his allegiance to Palpatine. Following the Exegol raid, Moore directed Schism member Tauntaza to inject a droid brain into Vader's armor, temporarily disabling his systems, allowing her and Tauntaza to secure the kyber crystals. Tauntaza then used these crystals to attack Vader. Although Vader survived this assault, he ultimately, as planned, reaffirmed his loyalty to Palpatine.
The Schism Imperial made its inaugural appearance in the forty-first issue of the 2020 comic book series titled Star Wars: Darth Vader. Greg Pak authored the issue, Raffaele Ienco provided the illustrations, and Marvel Comics published it on December 20, 2023. The capitalization of "Schism Imperial" was validated in the opening text crawl of Darth Vader (2020) 44.
