The Works

The Works, initially designated Sector 943 and often referred to as the Flatlands, constituted a sprawling industrial zone on Coruscant. Situated to the southwest of the Senate District and adjacent to the Fobosi District, Sector 943 once served as a major production hub for numerous corporations. These companies subsequently relocated to take advantage of cheaper labor and facilities beyond the planet. To prepare the area for purchase and redevelopment, urban developers released stone mites, duracrete slugs, and conduit worms into the Works, hoping to clear it out.

Description

The Works comprised an extensive, level industrial expanse located significantly below the Senate District. The Jedi Temple and the Pius Dea Spaceport overlooked the Works from the far north, while the resiblocks and commercial towers of the Fobosi District bordered it to the south.

History

Dooku meets with his Master in the LiMerge Building.

During the period of the Cold War, the Works were plagued by Cthons and reprogrammed droids that launched attacks on anyone within the area. A small contingent of the reconstituted Sith Empire also maintained a presence in the depths of the Works.

Following the Eternal Alliance's successful Revolt against the Eternal Empire, Commander Kallin established his base of operations in the Works, devising a plan to detonate explosives and bomb the Senate Tower. His goal was to provoke conflict and instigate a war between the Republic and the Alliance. However, the Eternal Alliance Recon Unit successfully located and eliminate him, averting a war between the two major powers.

At the onset of the Clone Wars, Count Dooku journeyed to the Works to inform his Master, Darth Sidious, of the war's commencement between the Republic and the Separatists. The Dark Lord expressed satisfaction with this development, viewing it as a significant stride toward the realization of the Sith's Grand Plan.

In 20 BBY, Sidious summoned Dooku back to the Works in response to Yoda's presence on Morriband. They initiated a Sith ritual, utilizing Dooku's blood to tap into his Force connection with his former Master. By fueling it with Force lightning, they successfully lured the Jedi Grand Master into an illusion. In this deception, Yoda, Anakin Skywalker, and a squad of clones were portrayed as en route to The Works to apprehend the Sith Lords. The intention behind this illusion was to shatter Yoda's spirit; however, the attempt proved unsuccessful.

Near the conclusion of the Clone Wars, Republic Intelligence, in collaboration with the Jedi Order, traced the Separatists back to the LiMerge Power building, a prominent tower situated in the heart of The Works. Two squads infiltrated the building: Aurek Team, led by Mace Windu, and Bacta Team, led by Shaak Ti. It was subsequently confirmed that Count Dooku, and possibly even the elusive Darth Sidious himself, had utilized this location until recently.

Count Dooku dedicated a significant portion of his time in The Works to mastering the teachings of the Sith. It is even speculated that Darth Maul may have undergone training in The Works. The area surrounding the LiMerge Power building was scattered with a small number of destroyed combat droids, all cleaved in two by a lightsaber.

By this point, The Works had become an area avoided by most citizens, primarily due to its inhabitants, which included smugglers, squatters, death stick peddlers, malfunctioning droids, gangsters, undocumented refugees, and Cthons. The majority of the structures within The Works were in a state of severe disrepair, having been abandoned for centuries. Nevertheless, many of the facilities were self-powered and continued to generate toxic waste and emit eerie mechanical noises across the low-lying factories long after the departure of their owners.

Later, the Galactic Empire repurposed the area as a manufacturing center for Sienar Fleet Systems TIE Fighters, producing hundreds of these starfighters daily. Toward the end of the Yuuzhan Vong War, underground forces of the Galactic Alliance utilized this area as a staging ground for the eventual Battle of Yuuzhan'tar.

Behind the scenes

The Works bears resemblance to a location featured in the Coruscant scenes of the alternate dark side ending of Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. It is worth noting, however, that in Jedi Knight, the Imperial Palace appears in place of the LiMerge Power building.
