The short story "Skin Deep: the Fat Dancer's Tale", written by A. C. Crispin, delves into the history of the Askajian dancer named Yarna d'al' Gargan. This story was featured in Tales from Jabba's Palace, a publication released in December of 1995 by Bantam Spectra.

Storyline Summary

The narrative unfolds the night following the Battle of the Great Pit of Carkoon. Tessek urgently arrives back at Jabba's Palace, informing everyone of Jabba's death, which throws the palace into disarray. Yarna d'al' Gargan, the Askajian dancer, finds herself liberated from servitude due to Jabba's demise. She seizes this opportunity to escape to Mos Eisley and retrieve her children, who are currently held captive by Jabba within the Desilijic Complex. While gathering the necessary provisions for her journey, Yarna encounters Doallyn, a Geranite huntsman residing in the palace due to dealings with Jabba. Doallyn, in need of Hydron-3 cartridges stored by Jabba to replenish his breathing mask, agrees to protect Yarna on her quest.

The unlikely duo successfully manages to leave Jabba's Palace, with Doallyn protecting Yarna from an attempted attack by Jabba's guards, Tornik and Warlug, as well as an assault by the serial killer Dannik Jerriko. They embark on a journey into the Dune Sea using a speeder. During their travels, Yarna and Doallyn share their life stories and develop a bond.

As they approach Mos Eisley, Yarna and Doallyn accidentally crash their speeder into a sand pit, close to a slumbering krayt dragon. The creature nearly kills Yarna, but Doallyn successfully defeats it by firing a blaster shot into its sinus cavity. Doallyn then retrieves the pearls from its stomach. However, while cutting off a piece of the Krayt Dragon's tail as a souvenir, he is knocked unconscious by a reflexive twitch of the tail. By this point, Doallyn has exhausted his supply of Hydron-3 and is in critical condition. Yarna carries him to Mos Eisley and uses the jewels she had been saving to free her children to instead purchase more Hydron-3 for him, saving his life.

Doallyn expresses his gratitude to Yarna for her selfless action, but Yarna is saddened, as she has lost her chance to reclaim her children. Fortunately, Doallyn compensates her with the dragon pearls, which they use to buy back Yarna's children, as well as a spaceship to leave Tatooine. Following some discussion, the pair decides to travel to Doallyn's homeworld.
