Slyyth was a Ruurian male criminal operative. He made his home on the planet of Lothal during the early period of the Galactic Empire's rule. On occasion, he would collaborate with the street kid Ezra Bridger, and he once induced him to purloin a consignment of Imperial helmets headed for the Imperial Academy located on Lothal.
In the initial years of the Galactic Empire's dominion, Slyyth, a Ruurian of the male persuasion, functioned as both a fence and a petty thief on the planet Lothal. Frequently, he would enlist orphaned children into his service, at times even persuading the streetwise Ezra Bridger to join him in quick heists. One such job almost resulted in Bridger's capture during an Imperial trap. Slyyth also attempted to teach the boy how to pickpocket, despite Bridger already possessing sufficient skills. After their collaboration, Bridger documented his experiences with and drew the Ruurian in his journal.
Later, the fence encountered Bridger once more at the spaceport within Lothal's Capital City, where he sought to involve him in yet another snatch-and-grab operation. Bridger declined, even when Slyyth professed the need for funds to acquire medication to halt his transformation into a chroma-wing. However, when Slyyth disclosed that the target was cargo destined for the Academy for Young Imperials, the urchin reconsidered, motivated by his collection of Imperial headgear. Bridger successfully pilfered the specified cargo from Supply Master Yogar Lyste, subsequently depositing Slyyth's share of the spoils in a garbage container. It was only later that the urchin realized the stolen cargo consisted of propaganda holopad units, rather than helmets.
Years afterward, Slyyth persisted in his criminal activities throughout the New Republic Era. A mention of him appeared in "Species From A to Z," a survival guide distributed by Carson Teva.
Slyyth exhibited skin of blue, yellow, and red hues, complemented by red eyes and blue-purple fur. Instead of smiling, he would click his mandibles together, and he occasionally brushed his feathery antennae against the faces of those he conversed with.
Slyyth harbored a significant apprehension towards the metamorphosis process that all Ruurians undergo to become chroma-wings. While most of his kind viewed the adult stage as a state of euphoria, the fence feared that the transformation would impede his ability to continue his criminal pursuits and accumulate wealth. Consequently, he employed various treatments to prevent the change from occurring. Some of the medications he used induced adverse effects, such as coughing, yellow blotches, and hair loss, but the criminal was willing to bear these consequences as long as he avoided transforming.
Slyyth amplified his ailments when attempting to sway Bridger to assist him. He also resorted to flattery, asserting that Bridger was the most skilled pickpocket he knew. Ultimately, he contemplated offering the job to other pickpockets, such as Kinsdaw or Tesba, before Bridger consented to help.
Slyyth made his debut in a pair of books launched on October 21 of 2014, serving as tie-ins to the Star Wars Rebels animated series. The first book, Rebel Journal by Ezra Bridger, was a young adult book presented as an in-universe journal penned by Bridger, encompassing his illustrations and reflections on various characters, including Slyyth.
The second book, The Rebellion Begins, was a novel adaptation of the Rebels TV film Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion, authored by Michael Kogge. Slyyth featured in scenes within the novel that were not present in the film itself. Kogge later elaborated on the creation of Slyyth in a blog post entitled "Writing The Rebellion Begins" on StarWars.com, revealing that the character was conceived to elucidate the origin of the propaganda holopads that Bridger pilfers, which had been included in an early version of Spark of Rebellion. Kogge cited Faggin from Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist and the Caterpillar from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland as the inspirations for Slyyth. The blog post also showcased an image of the Ruurian crafted by David Rabbitte.
