A Speaker represented one of the Nine Ruling Families' delegations within the Chiss Ascendancy's Chiss Syndicure. Functioning as the second-in-command within a family, the Speaker held a position just below the family's Patriarch.
Following the demise of a family Patriarch, a key responsibility of the Speaker involved collaborating with the family's Patriels to select the succeeding Patriarch.
While the Patriarch's duties centered on leading the family from their Homestead, often focusing on internal affairs, the Speaker served as the family's primary liaison to external entities. They resided in the Assembly Cupola situated in Csaplar, the capital city located on the planet Csilla. Consequently, Speakers needed to cultivate an extensive network of positive relationships with other families. Frequently, Speakers would delegate smaller Syndicure responsibilities to other Syndics from their family.
Certain families, like the Mitth, maintained a concealed rank called Syndic Prime, which occupied an intermediate position between the Speaker and the other Syndics. When Syndic Primes existed, they were regarded as the leading Syndic within that family.
Speakers also existed within non-ruling families; however, they did not participate in the Syndicure. Xodlak'brov'omtivti (Lakbrovom) held the position of Speaker for the Xodlak family, which was one of the forty Great Families.
