Spiders of the spice variety were arachnids belonging to a species of spider that inhabited Aaloth and Taul, with rumored sightings on Kessel. Their webs consisted entirely of glitterstim. Before the Battle of Takodana, a pack of spice spiders ambushed a group of droids marooned on Taul. Subsequently, Security droid PZ-99 gave his life to protect the other droids, with only one surviving to leave the planet. Fugas Fandita claimed that the spiders within the Spice mines of Kessel were drawn to light, could detect movement, and preyed on unsuspecting miners.
The design of spice spiders originated from concept art by Ralph McQuarrie, which also served as the inspiration for both the krykna and the knobby white ice spider.
