Squawk

Squawk was a clone trooper serving the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. Stationed on the planet of Devaron, Squawk was under the command of Clone Commander Ganch and the Jedi Master Bolla Ropal. Squawk was tasked with constructing a dam wall at Ropal's direction, working alongside Ganch and Ropal's Padawan apprentice, Tyzen Xebec. Squawk had little enthusiasm for the task, believing his skills would be better applied in combat. His constant wisecracks resulted in Ganch's annoyance and a scolding. During their labor, the Republic troops were attacked, and Ropal met his death soon after.

When the Padawan was assigned a new master, Jedi General Keelyvine Reus, Squawk remained with Xebec. Squawk, Xebec, and Ganch were sent to the surface of the agriworld Ukio to assess the planet's defenses against a possible Confederate invasion. During Project Instinction, an enemy initiative targeting the neural functions of living creatures, Squawk began attacking innocent gigauns, leading to a direct confrontation with Commander Ganch. Xebec later thwarted Project Instinction.

Attack on Devaron

Squawk hard at work on Devaron

Squawk was the chosen designation of a clone trooper, a clone created from the Human Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett. He fought for the Grand Army of the Republic when the Clone Wars erupted between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems with the onset of conflict.

He was placed in Clone Commander Ganch's squad, which operated under the command of Jedi Master Bolla Ropal and his Padawan, Tyzen Xebec. Ropal's unit was deployed to Devaron to establish a Republic presence, and the Jedi Master sought to assist the Devaronians with projects meant to improve relations during the occupation. To that end, he ordered the construction of a dam to revitalize the ecological balance of a previously barren valley. Squawk was among the clones assigned to the demanding task of damming the river, specifically the arduous construction of the dam wall. Commander Ganch supervised the operation, and when he instructed Squawk and his fellow soldiers to use their developed muscles to raise the dam, Squawk commented that he would prefer to use them to crush enemy battle droids. Ganch overheard the remark and rebuked Squawk for his insubordination.

Soon after, Devaron was subjected to a Confederate attack, with enemy forces advancing towards Squawk's location. The Low Altitude Assault Transport positioned on top of the dam wall was quickly destroyed by the enemy, and via Xebec, the clone troopers received orders from Ropal to maintain their position. Although the Jedi Master was eventually slain, Squawk survived the battle. He, together with Commander Ganch and Xebec, were reassigned to the command of Jedi General Keelyvine Reus.

Mission to Ukio

When Reus's fleet was dispatched to the agriworld Ukio to prevent a potential Confederate takeover, Squawk accompanied Ganch and Xebec as part of a team sent to the planet's surface to evaluate defensive systems. While traveling to the planet's surface aboard an LAAT gunship, Squawk joked that they would probably spend more time reading than anything else, prompting another reprimand from Ganch. Xebec concurred with Squawk, as Ukio's defenses were generally considered to be adequate. Ganch, however, was certain that the thorough inspection of the Ukian defenses requested by General Reus would consume most of their time. While on Ukio, they escorted Commander Ganch to the Ukian shield generator, where Squawk and his fellow clones waited outside. Eventually, the sky was darkened by Confederate agents, causing widespread panic. The issue was resolved by a brief opening of the shield by the Ukian liege, which dispersed the Moorjan soil being used to obscure the sun.

Squawk and Ganch team up against Tyzen Xebec.

Shortly after the cloud dissipated and the skies cleared, the enormous gigauns began deviating from their normal paths, trampling crops. A herd of them began moving dangerously close to the deflector shield complex, prompting Squawk to open fire on the defenseless creatures, hoping to deter them. When Commander Ganch noticed this, he ordered Squawk to cease firing, but the trooper disobeyed, sarcastically asking if he could expect a triplicate-signed order once the gigauns had flattened him and his fellow clones. When Ganch reprimanded Squawk again, he remarked that his Commander had a soft spot for unintelligent non-sentients. This angered Ganch, and he drew his weapon on Squawk in response. The trooper dropped his weapon, and asked the Commander to do the same, but Ganch was no longer interested in de-escalation. Suddenly, Xebec intervened, using his lightsaber to destroy Ganch's pistol, before demanding an explanation from the two clone troopers.

However, Squawk and Ganch then turned against Xebec. The Commander, struggling against his newfound violent stupor, was unable to prevent himself from violently attacking and pursuing the Padawan, intending to kill him. Ganch was eventually subdued, and Xebec managed to locate the devices causing the irregular behavior in those on Ukio, including Squawk. The devices were part of a Confederate initiative called Project Instinction, led by the enemy tactician "Doctor." The Republic prevailed, averting total disaster on Ukio initially, but the chaotic events resulted in a significant crash in stock value for Ukio itself. Magistrate Passel Argente of the Corporate Alliance was able to acquire a controlling interest in the planet, forcing the Republic to abandon the planet to their enemies, rendering their entire defensive effort pointless.

Personality and traits

Squawk voiced his opinions while building the dam on Devaron, earning a reprimand from his Commander, Ganch. He felt that his skills and strength would be better used fighting Confederate battle droids, rather than "blocking rivers." He also suspected that his assignment on Ukio would be dull, and joked to his fellow clone troopers that they would likely spend more time reading than engaging in any action. While under the influence of the Confederate Doctor's Project Instinction devices, Squawk resorted to attacking defenseless animals, and became openly insubordinate to his superior officer, Commander Ganch, even going so far as to insult his fellow clone. Like all clone troopers derived from Jango Fett, Squawk stood 1.83 meters tall.

Equipment

Squawk wore standard Phase I clone trooper armor. His helmet featured customizations, including a painted set of eyes and a jagged row of sharp teeth. He also wore painted spaulders. His preferred weapon was the DC-15S.

Behind the scenes

Squawk made his first appearance in the webcomic The Clone Wars: Act on Instinct, published in 2009, written by Pablo Hidalgo. He was introduced in the comic's first installment, rendered by Thomas Hodges.
