Star Wars: Chewbacca (2015)

Star Wars: Chewbacca, illustrated by Phil Noto, is a comic book series consisting of five issues, penned by Gerry Duggan. This miniseries, which is set in the immediate aftermath of the events portrayed in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, was launched on October 14, 2015, and reached its conclusion on December 30, 2015. The narrative follows Chewbacca, the main character of the series, as he finds himself temporarily marooned on a planet while undertaking a mission for the Rebel Alliance. He encounters the Galactic Empire and a new ally during his adventure.

Development

The initial announcement for Star Wars: Chewbacca was made in an MTV exclusive on July 10, 2015. This limited series, which began its release in October of 2015, featured writing by Gerry Duggan and artwork by Phil Noto. Jordan D. White, an editor at Marvel Comics, extended an invitation to Duggan to author a series centered around Chewbacca, which Duggan eagerly accepted. Duggan stated that Lucasfilm deemed Chewbacca a significant character, meriting his own standalone series, similar to Star Wars: Princess Leia and Star Wars: Lando.

A key discussion point for the creative team involved addressing Chewbacca's dialogue, given his lack of fluency in Galactic Basic Standard. Duggan informed MTV that Noto possessed the necessary artistic skills to effectively convey the story, regardless of whether the main character had spoken dialogue. Nevertheless, for internal use within Lucasfilm and Marvel, Duggan created two versions of each roar, one of which was translated into English.
