KOTOR – Remake, alternatively titled Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake, is an upcoming reimagining of the video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic developed by BioWare and released in 2003. The remake was initially unveiled at the Sony PlayStation Showcase event on September 9, 2021. Aspyr Media, who had previously handled ports of Knights of the Old Republic for contemporary systems, was originally slated to develop the game, with plans for it to be a timed exclusive on the PlayStation 5 and PC platforms upon its initial release.
However, on July 26, 2022, Bloomberg News published a report stating that the Remake's development had been put on hold indefinitely. Despite this, as of May 2023, Embracer Group, Aspyr's parent company, has asserted that the game is still planned for release at some point in the future. On April 2, 2024, Saber Interactive's CEO, Matthew Karch, stated that the Remake is "alive and well."
During the PlayStation Showcase event on September 9, 2021, the game's announcement was accompanied by a brief teaser trailer, but no specific launch date was provided. According to journalist Jason Schreier, Aspyr Media had been working on the project for almost three years by that time, with studio leaders aiming for a 2022 release. Several original team members from the Knights of the Old Republic BioWare development team were brought on board to contribute to the remake. Producer Ryan Treadwell mentioned that the team's objectives included ensuring the game could "live alongside the very best modern releases" while remaining true to the original's "revered story." Writer Sam Maggs departed from the project in November 2021, after contributing to the game for nine months.
Embracer Group, the parent company of Aspyr, revealed on May 19, 2022, that Saber Interactive would be assisting in the game's development. Matthew Karch, a board member at Embracer, described the remake as a "massive, massive product" but reassured fans that the final product would be "fantastic," and promised more details in the coming months. At Celebration Anaheim in May 2022, The Black Series line of action figures announced figures based on Darth Malak and Bastila Shan. These figures were based on the characters' designs in Remake and were said to be several years off from release.
On July 26, 2022, Bloomberg News reported that the project's development was indefinitely delayed due to internal issues at Aspyr. Schreier reported that a significant amount of time was dedicated to creating a vertical slice demo that was presented to representatives from Lucasfilm Ltd. and Sony Interactive Entertainment on June 30. While the development team was satisfied with the demo, Aspyr's leadership felt it was lacking. Shortly thereafter, design director Brad Prince and art director Jason Minor were both terminated, and work on the Remake was paused. Schreier's report indicated that developers at Aspyr believed the game was unlikely to be released before 2025, with some speculating that the project would be entirely outsourced to Saber Interactive. Schreier later implied in August that this had indeed occurred after Embracer announced that a "AAA project" had been moved to "another studio within the Group."
The project was not officially addressed again until 2023. During an investor meeting on May 24, Embracer's CEO, Lars Wingefors, when questioned about the game's status, responded that it was his "favorite question" but declined to provide a definitive answer. On the same day, the company released a financial report listing various titles in development, including the Remake. On April 2, 2024, Saber Interactive's CEO, Matthew Karch, affirmed that the Remake is "alive and well" and that the studio is "dedicated to making sure we exceed consumer expectations."
The game is being developed as a comprehensive and faithful remake of the original game. Given that the original Knights of the Old Republic is part of the Star Wars Legends continuity, the Remake is currently also regarded as such.
