Star Wars: Legion

Star Wars: Legion is a wargame for two players, characterized by its asymmetrical gameplay and focus on infantry combat, brought to you by Fantasy Flight Games. This game allows players to recreate battles from the Galactic Civil War, with one player commanding the forces of the Rebel Alliance and the other leading the Galactic Empire. The game includes more than 33 pre-assembled miniatures, along with a variety of cards to enhance gameplay. It was initially revealed to the public on August 18, 2017, and the Core Set became available on March 22, 2018. Later, the game expanded its scope to include content from the Clone Wars era.

The responsibility for this game, along with Star Wars: Armada and Star Wars: X-Wing Second Edition, was transitioned to Atomic Mass Games in 2020.

Publisher's Summary

The Star Wars galaxy is no stranger to war, from the Rebel Alliance's devastating defeat on Hoth to small groups of Rebels facing off against Imperial legions on Endor. Star Wars™: Legion offers you the opportunity to step onto the battlefield and guide your forces to victory in thrilling infantry engagements!

In Star Wars: Legion, players take on the role of commanders leading armies of miniatures through the Galactic Civil War. These armies include troopers, powerful vehicles, and iconic characters like Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. The game features innovative command mechanics to simulate the chaos and uncertainty of war. The unpainted, easily assembled miniatures provide a blank canvas for players to create their ideal Star Wars army, whether they choose to fight for the Empire or the Rebel Alliance.

Gameplay Overview

Star Wars: Legion involves two players who each control a miniature army that has been assembled and painted before the game begins. Army construction offers substantial flexibility, but players must adhere to a single faction (either Rebel or Empire). An army should include one or two commanders (such as Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader) and between three and six core trooper units. Additionally, players can incorporate up to three special forces units, three support units, and two heavy units. Each unit, along with its upgrades and abilities, is assigned a point value. Standard tournament games are played at 800 points, although players can agree to different point totals outside of tournament settings.

Before the game starts, players decide on the conditions, starting zones, and scenario. The scenario dictates how victory points are earned and how a player can win. The player who accumulates the most victory points by the game's end or fulfills the win condition first is declared the winner.

Gameplay unfolds over six rounds. At the start of each round, players select a Command Card from their hand (which was created during army construction). This card determines the turn order and allows the player's commander to issue commands to nearby units.

During a player's turn, they can either activate a unit that received a command from their Command Card or randomly select a token to activate an un-commanded unit. Activation grants a unit two actions, such as moving and attacking.

Each unit has a movement value ranging from 1 to 3, which corresponds to the size of the movement ruler used for planning movement. When attacking, each unit rolls a unique combination of custom dice. Units can also perform other actions, such as aiming and dodging, to improve their attack and defense, respectively. Additional actions may be available based on the unit's card or any upgrades it has.

Players alternate activations until all units have been activated.

Gameplay continues for six rounds, or until one player achieves the scenario's victory condition or one player has no remaining figures. If a player is eliminated, their opponent wins.
