Plot summary

The mathematician known as Jorin Sol has been successfully extracted from the control of the Galactic Empire and brought to the Rebel Fleet. Lieutenant Janek Sunber was shocked to discover that his childhood companion, Luke Skywalker, was in charge of the rescue operation, but soon transitions to a different conflict. Throughout the engagement, several near-death experiences convince him that he possesses a unique destiny. He then makes contact with Darth Vader to devise a scheme to trap the young Rebel.

Simultaneously, Skywalker finds himself entangled in the complexities of wartime politics. He is compelled to evade the inebriated advances of Deena Shan and subsequently receives a communication from Sunber, who claims to have been captured by the Empire and wishes to defect. Acting against direct orders, Skywalker and Shan commandeer an assault shuttle and rush to the station where Sunber is being detained. They infiltrate the station, rescue Sunber, and narrowly escape both stormtroopers and Shan's former Imperial lover, Kale Roshuir.

Upon their return to the Rebel Fleet, they learn that the brainwashed Jorin Sol has disclosed the Rebel Fleet's location to the Imperial forces, resulting in Darth Vader personally leading the assault. The Rebel flagship sustains damage during the attack, and Princess Leia suffers injuries. Sunber confronts her and Skywalker with a weapon, but Skywalker implores him to spare Leia's life. Sunber yields and assists him, but an explosion throws him into the depths of the ship. Sol breaks free from his mind control and propels the ship into hyperspace, only to perish shortly afterward in the resulting conflagration. Following the Rebel Fleet's escape, Imperial vessels retrieve an escape pod.
