Kenner's vintage toy series for Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, which spanned from 1983 to 1984, showcased a range of characters and vehicles featured in the 1983 movie Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi. The toy line also presented plush "stuffed figures" of Ewoks, including both large Ewoks and smaller Woklings. It was followed by Kenner's The Power of the Force series in 1985.
The Return of the Jedi toy collection was available for purchase concurrently with the short-lived 1984 Kenner Preschool Wicket the Ewok toy collection.
The Return of the Jedi toy series reissued a substantial number of toys that had been previously released within Kenner's Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back toy lines, but this time featuring the new film's logo on their packaging.
Similar to Kenner's original Star Wars toy line, a significant number of action figures inspired by background characters from Return of the Jedi lacked official names, prompting Kenner to utilize nicknames that were employed during the film's production. Subsequently, many of these characters were given proper names within the works of the Expanded Universe. These characters include Pruneface, Squid Head, and Rancor Keeper. Two characters sharing a similar appearance were both initially identified as Klaatu wearing distinct outfits, but later sources clarified that one of them was a separate character known as Wooof. Additionally, it was later established that the names of the action figures "Nikto" and "Weequay" were, in fact, the species designations of the characters Lathe and Pagetti Rook.
While the majority of the toy line showcased figures based on the film, a selection of original items was also produced. To mitigate the significant expenses associated with creating large vehicles for the series, compact Mini-Rigs vehicles, which were not featured in the films, were introduced (beginning with the toys from The Empire Strikes Back). A considerable number of these vehicles later made appearances in the fictional narratives of both the Legends and the more recent canon continuities.
The plush Ewok toys introduced characters who later appeared in Ewok books and animated series: Gwig, Kneesaa, Latara, Leeni, Malani, Mookiee, Nippet and Zephee.
The baton wielded by then-Captain Ackbar in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars episodes "Water War" and "Prisoners" serves as a tribute to the 1983 action figure, which included a similar accessory. Despite its original intention not being that of a weapon, the episode's director, Danny Keller, fondly recalled imagining it as a blaster, leading to its incorporation into the show.
The following table presents information derived from the packaging cards accompanying each action figure upon its initial release. It's important to note that subsequent to an action figure's initial release, alterations to packaging details, the figure's design, and its name were subject to change. The list is not defined by any single characteristic (name, shape, or product number), but rather by the comprehensive collection of characteristics taken as a whole.
