Star Wars Manga: Black

Star Wars Manga: Black, a one-shot manga in the style of Star Wars Tales, was published by Tokyopop. Serving as the initial installment, it precedes Star Wars Manga: Silver. Currently, it is available for purchase in both Japan and the United Kingdom, but there are no current plans to release it in the United States. Despite its initial announcement as an Infinities title, it was ultimately released without the Infinities label, and Leland Chee has characterized its canon status as uncertain. However, the most recent French editions feature an Infinities label on the back cover, thereby designating the material in these stories as non-canonical.

Daniel Wallace, the author, explicitly stated in his article We Need to Talk About Jar Jar, which appeared in Star Wars Insider 131 in February 2012, that the narratives contained within the Star Wars Manga: Black comic trade paperback are considered non-canon.

Publisher's summary

This month, Tokyopop is set to launch a Star Wars Manga anthology, presenting uniquely bold stories situated within a distinctly Japanese interpretation of the galaxy far, far away... Given their adventurous storylines and unconventional approaches, these narratives are undoubtedly "Infinities"—meaning they do not align with established Star Wars continuity. Nevertheless, they possess depth in character, intricate details, and dynamic action, making them worthy of exploration. This anthology, which blends black and white comics with select color spreads featuring original artwork, will initially be exclusively available in Japan.

Alongside the comic stories, the book includes full-color, poster-like illustrations. One notable piece by Kia Asamiya depicts a pensive Darth Vader, framed by the crossed lightsaber blades representing his past and present. Yuji Kaida illustrates Vader against the backdrop of the Death Star in progress, while Tsutomu Takahashi provides a somber portrait of the saber-wielding Dark Lord.
