Super Star Wars

Super Star Wars, the initial installment in a trilogy of Super Nintendo games, draws its inspiration from the original three Star Wars movies. It was launched in November of 1992. The narrative closely mirrors that of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The game saw a release on the Wii's Virtual Console in 2009, followed by a port to PlayStation 4 and Vita on November 17, 2015. The title Super Star Wars can apply either to the first game alone or to the series as a whole. These games are fundamentally platformers, though they integrate stages presenting diverse challenges, such as piloting a landspeeder or an X-wing fighter. Furthermore, all three games enable players to control multiple characters, each possessing unique abilities.

The game's instruction booklet provided additional names and details not explicitly stated within the game itself. The separately published Super Star Wars Official Game Secrets guide expanded even further on these details.

Gameplay

In general, Super Star Wars adheres closely to the storyline of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, albeit with adaptations to suit its platform action format. Characters must battle their way through successive scenes. For instance, instead of simply purchasing the droids from the Jawas, Luke Skywalker encounters C-3PO in the desert and then fights through the Jawa Sandcrawler to rescue R2-D2. The player-controlled characters, rather than Obi-Wan Kenobi, are responsible for deactivating the tractor beam after overcoming numerous adversaries.

Initially, the player gains control of Luke Skywalker, and then can choose to play as Han Solo or Chewbacca as the adventure progresses. Certain levels also allow players to control Luke's landspeeder and an X-wing fighter.

At one stage of development, the game planned to feature a garbage compactor level, potentially with the Dianoga as the boss. Early promotional images included a screenshot from this section.
