Takara's rancor

The crime lord known as Takara possessed a rancor as a pet, which he housed within his fortress. In the year 10 ABY, Mara Jade, a Jedi of the New Republic, was apprehended by Abron Mar, Takara's second-in-command, and confined to a cell inside Takara's fortress. Jade managed to break free and ultimately stumbled upon the rancor's den. After recovering her lightsaber from a nearby container, Jade engaged the rancor in combat and ended its life. Subsequently, she fled the stronghold.

Biography

Around the time of 10 ABY, the crime boss Takara acquired a rancor and decided to keep it as a companion. The rancor resided within Takara's fortress, occupying its own dungeon-like chamber. A gate, guarded by a Gamorrean, separated it from the rest of the fortress. The rock-walled enclosure contained a pool of sewage connected to a large, damaged sewage pipe. Typically, individuals who encountered the rancor were killed by it.

During 10 ABY, Takara's operatives pilfered a Global Communications Transponder from Ka'Pa the Hutt, Takara's rival. However, Ka'Pa crossed paths with the Jedi Mara Jade, who had arrived seeking supplies for the New Republic. In return for the provisions, Jade was tasked with retrieving the transponder. Her search led her to the planet Katraasii, where Abron Mar, Takara's most trusted lieutenant, captured her and imprisoned her in Takara's stronghold. Jade obtained a key, unlocked her cell, and, after evading guards, crawled into the damaged sewage pipe, swimming in the only available direction: towards the rancor's lair. Upon emerging from the sewage, the rancor emerged from a cove, ready to attack. However, Takara's men had placed Jade's confiscated lightsaber on the other side of the lair's gate entrance, guarded by the Gamorrean. Using the Force, Jade summoned her lightsaber and engaged the rancor in a duel. Despite the rancor's attempts to seize Jade with its massive clawed hands, it failed to capture her and fell victim to the Jedi's attacks. Moments later, the gate opened, and Jade made her escape. She eventually recovered the stolen transponder and was rescued from Takara's lair by Ka'Pa's forces.

Personality and traits

Takara's rancor was a substantial creature, characterized by brown skin and yellow eyes. Upon seeing Mara Jade, the rancor roared before attacking.

Behind the scenes

Takara's pet rancor made its debut in the 1998 video game Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith, appearing within the game, on the original box art, and in the game's manual. The rancor was invulnerable to all weapons except the lightsaber, forcing players to use the Force to obtain the lightsaber and defeat the rancor to advance in the game. Don Sielke designed Takara's stronghold and the rancor encounter, and Ryan Kaufman, the LucasArts continuity supervisor, later cited the rancor encounter as a highlight of the level.
