The animated television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars had a sixth season, known as The Lost Missions. Although a complete season of 22 episodes was the initial plan, only thirteen episodes were finished after the show was removed from Cartoon Network in March of 2013. Before its release on Netflix, The Lost Missions was first broadcasted on the German television channel Super RTL between February 15 and March 8 of 2014. Following an agreement with Disney and the ABC Television Group, The Lost Missions was launched on March 7, 2014, on Netflix for viewers in both the United States and Canada.
Christian Taylor, who was the head writer at the time, mentioned in September of 2011 that the writing for Season Six was already done. Production for the sixth season started by October of 2012. Dave Filoni, the Series Supervising Director, verified that his team had started working on the season's scripts and designs in Star Wars Insider 137.
Lucasfilm made an announcement on March 11 of 2013—after the fifth season finale—stating that production of new episodes for Cartoon Network had stopped, but that the studio would keep producing unreleased story arcs. In the weeks that followed the announcement, clips from episodes that would have been part of Season Six were shown and would still be released, even though the show was no longer on Cartoon Network. During the "Secrets of Star Wars: The Clone Wars" panel at Celebration Europe II, Filoni hinted that there was a small chance that Season Six could be shown on television in the future.
Filoni announced on October 11, 2013, that his crew had finished production on the remaining The Clone Wars episodes and that they would be released in early 2014.
The German television network Super RTL announced on January 16, 2014, that it would broadcast episodes from the "sixth season" of the series on Saturdays, starting on February 15 with four new episodes and continuing in the following weeks. StarWars.com announced on February 13, 2014, that the final thirteen episodes of the series would be released as "The Lost Missions" on Netflix in the United States and Canada on March 7. This was part of an agreement that also included the series' feature film and the first five seasons. The "Launch Pad" section in Star Wars Insider 148 revealed the titles, plot summaries, and credits for the episodes in English.
On March 7 at 12:01 am PT, The Lost Missions was released on Netflix, marking the end of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. To coincide with the Netflix release, StarWars.com published official episode guides for each of the final season's thirteen episodes.
Starting on June 9, 2014, The Lost Missions became available on seven more online platforms, including Apple iTunes in the US and Canada, Amazon, Google in the US and Canada, Microsoft in the US and Canada, Sony in the US and Canada, Verizon, and Vudu. The episodes were released on Blu-ray and DVD on November 11, 2014.
