Publisher's summary

A year has passed since the tragedy of The Fallen Star, and now the Jedi are struggling to overcome the Nihil's dominance over the galaxy.

The galaxy finds itself fractured. After the devastating destruction of Starlight Beacon, the Nihil have erected an impenetrable defense, the Stormwall, encircling a portion of the Outer Rim. Within this zone, Marchion Ro reigns supreme, and his followers carry out his destructive will. Jedi who are now trapped behind enemy lines, including Avar Kriss, must wage a war to protect the worlds being ravaged by the Nihil, all while evading the marauders and the terrifying Nameless.

Outside the Nihil's so-called Occlusion Zone, Elzar Mann, Bell Zettifar, and their fellow Jedi collaborate with the Republic in an effort to reach the worlds isolated from the wider galaxy. However, every attempt to penetrate the Stormwall has ended in failure, and even communication across the barrier is impossible. Both Elzar and Bell are burdened by their failures and losses, fueling their desperate search for a solution.

Even if the Republic and Jedi forces manage to break through the Stormwall, how will the Jedi stand against the Nameless creatures that feed on their connection to the Force? And what other horrors does Marchion Ro have waiting? As the Jedi and the Republic sink deeper into desperation, the hope of reunifying the galaxy could be snuffed out entirely…

Development

George Mann maintained close collaboration with Charles Soule during the writing process. At Celebration Europe, Mann characterized the novel as a narrative focused on "the triumph of Marchion Ro." He also inadvertently disclosed that Elzar Mann and Avar Kriss would be featured. During San Diego Comic Con 2023, Mann described the novel as "brutal." Goldsboro Books, a UK-based bookstore, offered a special edition of The Eye of Darkness featuring numbered copies (limited to 750), signatures, and yellow-sprayed pages.

Continuity

  • In the original hardcover and audiobook editions of The Eye of Darkness, the list detailing planets now under Nihil control due to the expansion of the Stormwall initially included Sullust, Pantora, and Malastare. However, the digital version revises this list, replacing them with Triton, Abtin, and Elrood as being located behind the new Stormwall border. [8]
  • An error occurs on page 254, where it's stated that Nib Assek would participate in the attempt to breach the Stormwall. This is incorrect, as Nib Assek perished during the events of The High Republic: The Fallen Star.
  • On page 262, the novel incorrectly spells Quarik as Quirik. This issue is later corrected on page 270.
  • On page 319, the order of Xo Lahru's names is reversed, and he is referred to as Lahru Xo.
  • On page 341, Seswenna sector is misspelled as Seswanna sector. Correct spellings are used for other mentions of the sector within the book.
