Torize

The planet named Torize was situated within its namesake system, which itself resided along the Trition Trade Route in the Kathol sector of the Outer Rim Territories. This world served as a significant hub for both trade and industry, featuring numerous space stations in orbit and spaceports scattered across its surface. Being a naturally volcanic planet with substantial geological activity, Torize possessed an atmosphere that posed a danger to most lifeforms, necessitating the use of a breath mask. The atmospheric conditions were further degraded by an industrial incident in 5 ABY that released toxic contaminants into the air. In 8 ABY, Kal'Shebbol, the sector's capital, experienced liberation at the hands of New Republic forces, which compelled the local Imperial warlord, Moff Kentor Sarne, to withdraw. Subsequently, the planet became embroiled in an internal power struggle between Imperial loyalists determined to maintain control and New Republic sympathizers seeking to overthrow them.

Description

Within the Outer Rim Territories' Kathol sector, the planet of Torize was found in the Torize system. It occupied a position on the Trition Trade Route, nestled between the Kal'Shebbol and Kolatill systems, and also had a connecting route to the Oon Tien system. As a crucial point along the Trition Trade Route, this world was located eighteen hours away from Kal'Shebbol, the sector capital, when traveling by a Class One hyperdrive. Kolatill was a day and four hours away, while Oon Tien was fourteen hours distant. Boasting a population of 1.5 billion, Torize functioned as a major manufacturing center, characterized by the presence of numerous space stations encircling the planet and extensive starports dotting its surface. Being a naturally volcanic world, its atmosphere was classified as Type II, requiring residents to use a breath mask when venturing outdoors. The toxic nature of the atmosphere was exacerbated in 5 ABY due to the accidental release of pollutants following an industrial mishap.

History

The Trition Trade Route, with Torize located between Kal'Shebbol and Kolatill

Torize came under the dominion of the Imperial forces, and Moff Kentor Sarne, the governor of the Kathol sector, strategically positioned a defensive fleet within the system to safeguard its industrial infrastructure. The space stations in orbit were also placed under the authority of Imperial officials. Following the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, Moff Sarne severed ties with the Empire and established himself as a warlord, thereby bringing Torize under his direct control. In 5 ABY, a significant industrial accident occurred on the planet, resulting in the emission of toxic pollutants into the atmosphere.

After the liberation of Kal'Shebbol by New Republic forces in 8 ABY, Moff Sarne was compelled to abandon his capital, taking the majority of his forces with him. En route deeper into the Kathol sector, Sarne made a stop at Torize to augment his fleet with vessels from the planetary defense force. Furthermore, he instructed the Imperial commanders of the space stations to maintain their positions. While the commanders adhered to these orders, the majority of the space station crews and the planet's population were inclined to disavow the Empire and Sarne, and instead align themselves with the New Republic.

The New Republic CR90 corvette FarStar, which was on a mission to locate Moff Sarne, arrived at Torize and discovered that the system was experiencing an internal power struggle. Surrounded by patrol ships and TIE Fighters, the corvette was ordered to surrender and was subsequently boarded and taken to one of the stations. On board, the crew of the FarStar encountered individuals loyal to the New Republic who requested assistance in orchestrating an armed revolt to overthrow the Imperial authorities.

Locations

Given its status as a major industrial and trade hub, Torize possessed numerous spaceports situated on the planet to facilitate commercial and manufacturing activities. Additionally, the planet was encircled by a number of space stations.

Behind the scenes

Torize made an appearance in The DarkStryder Campaign, a supplement produced by West End Games for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. While the planet was not directly featured in any specific adventure, its inclusion was intended to allow gamemasters to incorporate the location into original adventures. A specific "adventure hook" was detailed in the scenario Omens. This article operates under the assumption that the FarStar did indeed visit the planet as described in the published adventure hook.

Both the Star Wars Encyclopedia and The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, published in 1998 and 2008 respectively, contained a misspelling of the planet's name, rendering it as "Lorize" in their entries pertaining to the Kathol sector.
