Kal'Shebbol system

The Kal'Shebbol system, a star system situated within the Kathol sector of the Outer Rim Territories, held significant importance. The system's main world, Kal'Shebbol, functioned as a crucial trading center along the Trition Trade Route that traversed the sector. When the Kathol sector joined the Galactic Republic, the Kal'Shebbol system became its primary system, with Kal'Shebbol designated as the sector's capital. In 19 BBY, control of the Kal'Shebbol system shifted to the Galactic Empire. Subsequently, in 4 ABY, following the death of Emperor Palpatine at the Battle of Endor, Moff Kentor Sarne withdrew the entire sector from the Empire, establishing his own [warlord](/article/warlord/legends] dominion. The Kal'Shebbol system served as the central point of his control until 8 ABY, when the New Republic successfully launched a operation that removed him from power.

Description

Within the Outer Rim Territories' Kathol sector, one could find the Kal'Shebbol system, which contained the planet known as Kal'Shebbol. Mirroring a common naming convention throughout the galaxy, the system adopted the name of its most important world. Via hyperlane, the system had connections to the Brolsam and Torize systems within the Kathol sector, as well as the Pergitor system in the Minos Cluster. Furthermore, it acted as a significant hub along the Trition Trade Route that passed through the sector. The system's location was near the boundary separating the Kathol sector and the Minos Cluster. Using a Class 1 hyperdrive, starships required a little over nine days to travel from the Kal'Shebbol system to Pergitor, eighteen hours to reach Torize, and a day and six hours to arrive at Brolsam.

History

The Trition Trade Route, showing the Kal'Shebbol system in relation to the rest of the Kathol sector

Around 392 BBY, escaped Twi'lek slaves established a settlement on Kal'Shebbol, the system's primary world. Upon the Kathol sector's formal incorporation into the Galactic Republic, Kal'Shebbol was chosen as the sector's capital, superseding the planet Gandle Ott, which was situated at the Trition Trade Route's end. Despite Gandle Ott's establishment as the sector's first official colony two hundred years prior to Kal'Shebbol, the latter's proximity to Republic space led to its designation as the capital.

With the conclusion of the Clone Wars in 19 BBY, the Galactic Republic underwent a transformation, becoming the Galactic Empire, and the Kal'Shebbol system came under Imperial authority. In 2 BBY, Moff Kentor Sarne was assigned to oversee the sector, establishing his headquarters on Kal'Shebbol. Sarne's rule brought about a ban on unrestricted travel to and from the Kal'Shebbol system.

The Battle of Endor in 4 ABY saw the death of Emperor Palpatine. As Imperial High Command fragmented, with high-ranking officials seceding from the Empire to create their own warlord territories, Moff Sarne quietly separated the Kathol sector from Imperial control, forming his own domain. For the subsequent four years, the Kal'Shebbol system served as the core of Sarne's power, and he stationed several warships within the system to safeguard his capital.

In 8 ABY, the New Republic launched a campaign with the aim of removing Sarne from his position. Sarne's incursions into the neighboring Minos Cluster, achieved through the employment of exotic technology, resulted in initial victories. Following his repulse, a task force was dispatched to liberate Kal'Shebbol and bring an end to his reign. While a commando team worked to lower the planetary shields, the task force engaged Sarne's forces in orbit around Kal'Shebbol. The New Republic emerged victorious, and the Kal'Shebbol system came under their control, although Sarne managed to escape with the majority of his fleet. The New Republic appointed an Elomin named Monjai as governor, with plans to deploy a defensive fleet to the system in the coming months.

Kal'Shebbol

Kal'Shebbol featured a single continent, which was home to the planet's entire population. The world's landscape consisted of expansive, open plains and gentle hills, and it possessed a breathable atmosphere suitable for most oxygen-breathing species. The planet's conditions were conducive to both agriculture and the grazing of herd animals, such as the indigenous chollas. Traditionally, the planet operated under a system of clan and city-states, but this social structure was disrupted when the Empire assumed control, as the new authorities showed little regard for the planet's established customs. The planet's inhabitants primarily consisted of Twi'leks and Humans, along with significant populations of other alien races.

Behind the scenes

The Kal'Shebbol system was conceived for The DarkStryder Campaign, a roleplaying game supplement released by West End Games in 1995. Timothy Zahn's short story, The Saga Begins, used the system's main world, Kal'Shebbol, as its primary setting. Later, in 2009, the system was featured in The Essential Atlas and its online companion.
