Trench Run Defense

The initial Trench Run utilized in opposition to the first Death Star

Trench Run Defense, or TRD, represented a strategic approach to combatting large warships. It was inspired by the triumph of Rebel Alliance starfighter squadrons against the Death Star during the Battle of Yavin, an event famously known as the trench run. Among pilots, targets vulnerable to this tactic were jokingly said to suffer from "Trench Run Disease".

Description

When confronting sizable starships, pilots would maneuver their craft extremely close to the exterior of the vessel, utilizing trenches present on the hull to gain cover from incoming fire. This allowed starfighters to deliver their ordnance onto vulnerable sections of the capital ship with relative safety, provided they had adequate escort protection against enemy fighters. X-wing pilots achieved notable success employing TRD against Imperial-class Star Destroyers and other large capital ships. The capital ships' armaments were predominantly designed for engaging other large vessels, rendering them largely ineffective against smaller, faster, and more maneuverable snubfighters. This tactic proved particularly devastating when the snubfighters were armed with proton torpedoes, concussion missiles, or other similarly powerful munitions capable of inflicting significant damage to a large ship's critical systems.

In response to the effectiveness of this tactic at Yavin and other engagements, the Imperial Navy prioritized the development and deployment of the faster and more agile TIE Interceptor-class fighter. They also introduced the Lancer-class frigate, a specialized escort ship designed specifically to counter screens of enemy starfighters.

During the Fondor shipyard assault and the Battle of Endor, Rebel forces applied this strategy against an Executor-class prototype with cloaking technology and the Executor itself, respectively.

Following the First Battle of Borleias, Commander Wedge Antilles observed that, regardless of the relatively low success rate of snubfighters against Imperial Star Destroyers, the destruction of the Death Star had instilled a deep-seated fear of the tactic in Imperial commanders.

During the Battle of Thyferra, Rogue Squadron employed a variation of this tactic. They skillfully maneuvered their X-Wings through the defensive systems of Ysanne Isard's Super Star Destroyer Lusankya, utilizing their targeting systems to direct massive barrages of proton torpedoes and concussion missiles launched from nearby freighters.

Trench Run Defense typically involved a three-ship formation arranged in a triangular shape. The two rear starfighters provided shield cover for the lead fighter, protecting it for as long as possible. The lead fighter was usually equipped with potent weaponry intended to neutralize the target.

The archetypal "trench run"

The initial "trench run" was executed by Rebel pilots during the Battle of Yavin. Modified versions of this tactic were subsequently used in attacks targeting planetary bases and other terrain-focused combat zones. For example, during the Second Battle of Borleias, Corran Horn successfully executed a trench run in his X-Wing, destroying a conduit that supplied additional power to the Imperial base's ground defenses.

Wraith Squadron also pioneered a variation of this tactic for evading pursuit within urban environments, natural trenches, or valleys. By plunging into the shelter of a trench, pilots could shake off pursuing enemy starfighters by executing an incredibly complex flight pattern or by descending deep enough to make overhead pursuit equally challenging.
