On Crait, members of the Resistance army occupy a trench. Trench warfare represented a form of surface warfare where opposing infantries engaged in combat through networks of ground-level trenches, attacking, defending, and launching counterattacks from these positions. Extended periods of time spent in damp, cold, and unsanitary environments could cause soldiers' feet to develop a medical ailment referred to as "trench foot."

Due to the dense and ionized atmosphere of Mimban, which hindered air support operations, the Imperial campaign against the Mimbanese Liberation Army depended heavily on troops entrenched in defensive positions. The Rebel Alliance also utilized trenches at their base on Crait and at Echo Base located on Hoth. In 34 ABY, the Resistance Army employed the Rebellion's pre-existing trench system on Crait during their stand against the advancing forces of the First Order.
