A WED Treadwell repair droid, serving at the Wheel space station, was taken over by the Imperial Security Bureau during the Galactic Civil War that pitted the Galactic Empire against the Alliance to Restore the Republic. This droid became a tool for espionage, monitoring the offices and cargo areas of IsoTech, a tech salvage firm situated on the Wheel. This surveillance began after IsoTech received a message pod originating from the long-lost Confederacy of Independent Systems Munificent-class Star Frigate named Sa Nalaor. Upon discovering that IsoTech had hired a group of spacers to locate the frigate, the ISB utilized the droid in an attempt to attach a tracking beacon to the group's starship. The droid was equipped with multiple arms, some of which held tools such as fusioncutters, spot sprayers, foam sealants, torque wrenchs and a power calibrator.
However, the spacers had stationed guards around their ship, and they noticed the droid as it was trying to attach the beacon. The droid attempted to get rid of the beacon, but it was captured. Despite a thorough examination, the spacers found nothing out of the ordinary about the droid, except for the beacon; it seemed identical to any other Treadwell maintenance droid on the Wheel.
The WED unit made its initial appearance in 2013 within Beyond the Rim, an adventure module crafted by Sterling Hershey for the Fantasy Flight Games roleplaying game, Star Wars: Edge of the Empire. This write-up posits that the droid is apprehended during its attempt to plant the beacon. However, the mission could succeed if the players fail to detect the droid or neglect to post guards. Furthermore, the droid might evade capture altogether if it manages to escape when spotted.
