Unidentified red giant (Gardaji Rift)

A star of the red giant variety orbited in close proximity to a white dwarf within the Gardaji Rift, situated within the Outer Rim Territories of the galaxy. The white dwarf drew plasma from the red giant, subsequently ejecting it outwards in a radiant, spiraling formation of red and purple gas. This phenomenon manifested as a massive pinwheel-like structure, providing a striking source of light in the skies above the planet Zonama Sekot.

Description

Within the [Gardaji Rift](/article/gardaji_rift], a region of the Gardaji sector located in the Outer Rim Territories region of the galaxy, resided a red giant star. This red giant orbited closely to a white dwarf star, forming part of a trinary star system. A yellow dwarf was positioned several light-months away from the pair, and was the star that the sentient planet Zonama Sekot orbited until it departed the system in the year 29 BBY.

The white dwarf siphoned a stream of plasma from its red giant companion, which then swirled around it before being expelled outwards as an expansive spiral of ionized gas exhibiting red and purple hues. The movement of the double-star system and the gas created an appearance similar to a large pinwheel. This pinwheel effect stretched across the northern sky of Zonama Sekot, illuminating the planet during both the day and night.

History

In 29 BBY, when Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, both Human Jedi, visited Zonama Sekot along with Raith Sienar, a Human starship designer, and Charza Kwinn, a Priapulin pilot, they were all greatly impressed by the spectacle of the double-star system's radiant display.

Behind the scenes

The red giant made its initial appearance in Rogue Planet, a novel penned by Greg Bear in 2000. The Essential Atlas, a reference book from 2009, situated the Gardaji Rift, and consequently the red giant, within grid square M-1. The 2012 book titled The Essential Reader's Companion later asserted that during the events depicted in Rogue Planet, Zonama Sekot was located in square M-3 instead. However, such a placement would position the star system containing the planet at that time outside of the Gardaji sector, which is where the Gardaji Rift—the location of Zonama Sekot in Rogue Planet—is situated. Therefore, this article considers the placement from The Essential Reader's Companion to be inaccurate.
