Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series

title: Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series

Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series, a canon trilogy of virtual reality video game experiences, was brought to life by ILMxLAB. David S. Goyer, the writer and executive producer, previously penned the VR experience Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire. Episode I debuted on May 21, 2019 for the Oculus Quest, with Episode II and III following on September 25, 2019, and November 21, 2019, respectively. On August 25, 2020, all three episodes were bundled together for PlayStation VR. Taking place in 1 BBY after Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, the series centers on Darth Vader's activities on Mustafar.

Development

The project's initial announcement occurred at Celebration Europe in 2016. On September 25, 2018, ILMxLAB offered a preview of the project on their Facebook and Instagram accounts, and subsequently released a teaser trailer the following day. Later that same day, The Star Wars Show confirmed that the narrative of the series would be set between the events of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

A panel dedicated to the series was presented at Celebration Chicago on April 12, 2019. It featured the developers, including writer David S. Goyer, and included an exclusive interactive preview of the first episode of the series.

Tim Alexander, ILMxLAB's supervisor, stated that the concept emerged during discussions about how to effectively expand the Star Wars universe, with Vader being the initial character considered. Ben Snow explained that the plot element involving Vader's use of a mercenary to locate an artifact that could bridge the gap between life and death was partially inspired by Raiders of the Lost Ark, and was intended to add further depth to Vader's character.

Release and reception

In 2019, Vader Immortal was among the finalists for an Emmy nomination in the "Outstanding Innovation in Interactive Media" category. It secured the 2020 Game Developers Choice Award for Best VR/AR Game, as well as the 2020 Producers Guild of America Award for Innovation.
