Vratix

The Vratix constituted a species of sentient insectoid beings originating from the planet of Thyferra. They are credited with the invention of bacta, a gelatinous compound that facilitated accelerated recovery from severe wounds. The creation of bacta induced a near-spiritual euphoria in the Vratix. The substance's effect on them was so powerful that it created a compelling urge to continually produce it.

Following the discovery of bacta's curative properties, the Human colonists on Thyferra began exploiting the Vratix's addiction. They incentivized increased bacta production, which they then commercialized for profit. Eventually, the Vratix were reduced to a slave workforce, while the settlers amassed considerable wealth.

Behind the scenes

The initial mention of the Vratix within the current Star Wars canon occurred in the 2019 reference publication, Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition. Within the Star Wars Legends continuity, the Vratix were initially referenced in the roleplaying game article titled "The Business of Bacta," authored by Michael Kogge and featured in the third edition of the Star Wars Adventure Journal magazine, dated August 1, 1994.
