Located within the Inner Rim Territories and situated along the Rimma Trade Route, Thyferra was a planet. The Vratix species, its homeworld's natives, were the inventors of bacta, a substance they eventually grew addicted to. When humans settling on the planet came across the bacta, they took advantage of the Vratix addiction, marketing and selling the product to a wider audience. Vratixia renanicus, a type of barley, was also farmed on this world. Later, the First Order took command of Thyferra. Following their defeat at the Battle of Exegol in 35 ABY, the planet experienced an open rebellion against the regime.
A terrestrial planet, Thyferra was positioned in the Inner Rim Territories, specifically in grid square L-14 of the Standard Galactic Grid. It was linked by the Rimma Trade Route to the celestial bodies Yag'Dhul and Ghorman.

During the High Republic Era, which was a specific time in history, the Vratix species, who were native to Thyferra, had just created bacta. They developed such a strong addiction that they felt compelled to keep producing it. With the eventual arrival and settlement of humans on the planet, the healing properties of bacta were discovered. The settlers exploited the Vratix's addiction, pushing them to increase bacta production and then selling it to the public. The natives became an enslaved workforce, while the settlers realized significant profits.
Around 232 BBY, the barley variety known as Vratixia renanicus was being cultivated on Thyferra and served as a key component in bacta production. Around that year, Marlaa Jinara, who owned a junkyard, spent time on Thyferra, engaged in various adventures. In 232 BBY, Kai Brightstar, a Jedi youngling, requested a story about her experiences, and she agreed, first asking if he had heard of the world. The Bacta Slush drink was invented by the natives of Thyferra as a remedy for internal ailments. In 3 ABY, it was announced that a freighter from Thyferra was approaching Mirogana Spaceport in Mirogana, a city located on the moon of Toshara.
By 4 ABY, the Bacta Cartel was active on the planet. The First Order, a military organization that arose from the remnants of the Galactic Empire following their defeat in 5 ABY, eventually seized control of Thyferra. In 34 ABY, the Halcyon, a Star Cruiser belonging to Chandrila Star Line, traveled past Thyferra during a cruise from the Chandrila system in the Core Worlds to the Outer Rim Territories. A map displaying the position of the planet within the galaxy was visible on multiple screens aboard the starship. Between 34 ABY and 35 ABY, Strono Tuggs, an Artiodac chef, embarked on a culinary tour of the galaxy. He tasted a Bacta Slush and included a recipe for the beverage in his cookbook, The Ultimate Cookbook, which was published in 35 ABY, noting its taste and origin. After the First Order's defeat at the Battle of Exegol in 35 ABY, numerous planets began revolting against the regime. Thyferra was one such planet that experienced an uprising, following similar revolts on Coruscant and Corellia.
The insectoid Vratix called Thyferra home, but they were exploited for bacta production by humans who later established settlements there. Arvel Crynyd, a human from the planet, was a Z-95 Headhunter pilot for the Bacta Cartel before he joined the Rebel Alliance.
Thyferra was initially mentioned in current Star Wars canon on a map in issue fifty-second issue of Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon, a magazine by De Agostini released around December 30, 2015. The planet's first in-universe appearance occurred through a map in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, an immersive roleplaying experience at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida that opened on March 1, 2022.
Within the Star Wars Legends continuity, Thyferra was originally mentioned in "The Business of Bacta," a roleplaying game article by Michael Kogge featured in the third issue of the Star Wars Adventure Journal magazine in August 1994. The planet then appeared in X-Wing: The Bacta War, a 1997 novel by Michael A. Stackpole and the fourth book in the Star Wars: X-Wing series.
