Kai Brightstar, a Jedi youngling of the human male variety, journeyed to the forest planet of Tenoo for his Jedi training during the High Republic Era.
Around 240 BBY, a human male Jedi youngling named Kai Brightstar first came into the world. His closest companions were the Pantoran youngling Lys Solay and the Pooba youngling Nubs. At the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, a planet, they underwent training together, instructed by Jedi Masters Yoda and Zia Zaldor Zanna. In 232 BBY, the time arrived for the younglings to advance their training elsewhere; Brightstar, Solay, and Nubs received orders to travel to Tenoo, a planet situated in the Outer Rim Territories. However, when Yoda announced this to the assembled younglings, the trio was absent, engaged in a final attempt to beat their record on the training course—Brightstar had proposed one last try before their departure.

Concealed behind cover, the three devised a strategy to bypass the training remote droids and secure a beacon. Solay opted to dash to one side of the course, diverting the droids' fire and enabling Brightstar and Nubs to rush toward the beacon. With Nubs's paws providing a launching point, Brightstar executed a flip toward the beacon, then walked backwards, using his lightsaber to deflect the droids' lasers. He initially refused assistance from his friends, but when he stumbled, they intervened. Solay reminded him that friends offer mutual support, a notion Brightstar acknowledged, admitting he had believed he could manage alone. They persisted in blocking laserfire until Brightstar was within reach of the beacon, which he seized, surpassing their previous record. Their celebration was slightly marred by Nubs's overly enthusiastic hug for Brightstar.
Master Zanna then appeared via hologram, cautioning the younglings to hasten to their shuttles for Tenoo. Brightstar apologized for their lateness. They boarded the last shuttle, where the pilot, a human named Nash Durango, and her droid, RJ-83, were performing pre-flight repairs. Brightstar inquired about the pilot's identity, and upon learning it was Durango, Solay expressed surprise at her youth. Durango countered that the Jedi were also children, introducing herself and receiving the younglings' names in return. They boarded her starship, the Crimson Firehawk, and launched into hyperspace, much to the Jedi's delight.
During the journey, Durango permitted the Jedi to explore her ship, showcasing the food and games available. Brightstar observed a Gedonian ground weevil in a box, which snapped at him. Solay, in contrast, effortlessly picked it up—Brightstar explained to Durango her affinity for creatures. Brightstar then noticed the holochess table, which greatly excited him. At Durango's prompting, he described the Jedi's activities at the Temple and concurred with her Jedi Knight definition of "heroes," adding that they aided others through the Force. She requested him to levitate a tool, but Solay intervened, noting that using the Force demanded concentration and practice.

Eventually, they reached Tenoo, emerging from hyperspace to reveal the planet. Before landing, Hap, a restauranteur, contacted Durango via comlink, seeking assistance with thieving pirates. He expressed disappointment that the Jedi accompanying Durango were merely children, but they insisted they could help. The Crimson Firehawk landed in Kublop Springs, Durango's hometown, where the trees captivated Brightstar.
He prepared his friends, and they hurried to the restaurant, Hap's Sap Tap, where the pirates had finished loading their stolen goods onto a cart. Brightstar commanded the lead pirate, Taborr Val Dorn, to return the stolen items. Val Dorn refused, ordering his associates to transport the goods back to his starship and activating an electrostaff to engage the Jedi. Brightstar ignited his lightsaber in response, dueling with the pirate while his friends attempted to prevent Hap's possessions from being taken. He and Val Dorn impressed each other, but the latter escaped by shooting tree branches above, forcing Brightstar to halt fighting and focus on using the Force to move the falling branches to protect Hap's cafe.

This time, he solicited assistance from his friends, and together they prevented damage to the restaurant. Once the branches were safely on the ground, Brightstar contacted Durango via comlink—the pilot flew to the pirates' ship, and RJ-83 extended a cable to attach to the cart. Pord and EB-3, two of Val Dorn's pirates, disconnected the cable, but the distraction allowed the Jedi to catch up. Brightstar propelled himself off Nubs's paws, mirroring their training course maneuvers, pushing the cart back, where Solay and Nubs defended it from the pirates. He ordered Val Dorn to depart, who complied but vowed revenge.
Durango then transported them to the Tenoo Jedi Temple, which astonished the Jedi. They apologized for their lateness but were commended for their actions. Brightstar attributed their success to his friends' assistance, and they embraced—he still found Nubs's grip excessively tight. Zanna led them on a tour of their new home, and Brightstar assured Nubs that there would be ample food and second helpings.

During a training exercise, the trio faced the challenge of navigating past a droid while maintaining balance on wooden poles. Solay proposed bypassing the droid instead of fighting it, reaching the platform first. Nubs followed, but he slipped, catching himself on a rope beneath the platform. Brightstar hurried to assist, but the droid knocked his lightsaber from his grasp. Forced to choose between retrieving his weapon and helping his friend, he opted for both, levitating the lightsaber and Nubs. However, upon regaining his saber, he lost concentration, dropping Nubs and failing the challenge. Brightstar apologized to Nubs afterward, who forgave him with a hug.
Master Zanna, who had been overseeing the session, introduced a special guest: Master Yoda, whose significance Brightstar had to explain to a spectating Durango. Brightstar approached him eagerly but hesitated, timidly asking if Yoda had observed his training. Yoda had, reminding the youngling to prioritize friends over replaceable objects. He then addressed the assembled younglings, announcing that they would showcase their skills at a festival in Kublop Springs that night. As the others departed with Zanna to practice, Yoda detained Brightstar, Solay, and Nubs, tasking them with retrieving an item for the festival. He provided directions and departed. Brightstar was thrilled to receive a mission from Yoda, and the Jedi and Durango departed in the Crimson Firehawk.

Unbeknownst to them, Taborr Val Dorn and his gang were spying on them and resolved to follow. The crew traveled to the planet Yarrum—during the walk to the vendor, Brightstar and Solay speculated about the item's nature. They were disappointed when the Aqualish vendor presented them with a small bag of seeds, but Brightstar remained optimistic, asserting that anything Yoda deemed important was indeed so. Back on the Firehawk, a distress signal began to sound, prompting them to rush to its source. However, it was a ruse by Val Dorn, who seized the opportunity to ransack the unattended ship and steal the seeds. The Jedi raced to Yarrum Tower, a marketplace for stolen goods, on a speeder bike provided by Durango, while the pilot and RJ-83 repaired the damaged ship.

Indeed, Val Dorn had attempted to sell the seeds without success. The Jedi infiltrated his ship just as he was preparing to leave Yarrum Tower, and Brightstar quickly located the goods. Nubs danced in celebration but inadvertently activated a gonk droid, alerting the pirates to their presence. Pord and EB-3 attempted to re-steal the seeds, so Brightstar tossed them to Solay, who gained the high ground by leaping onto a crate. She passed them to Nubs, and Brightstar wedged an upturned box onto EB-3, blinding him. Solay opened the hatch, and she and Nubs jumped out while Brightstar dueled with Val Dorn. He used the Force to knock the pirate into Pord and saw that Durango and RJ had arrived in the repaired Firehawk.
Solay jumped aboard, and Nubs attempted to follow but fell short, clinging to a cable extending from the Firehawk's hatch. Brightstar moved to assist, but Val Dorn seized the Jedi's lightsaber with a cord, gloating over his new acquisition. Brightstar reached for it, on the verge of retrieving it, but he realized that Nubs's safety was paramount and helped his friend instead, lifting him back into the ship with the Force. He turned to find the three pirates pursuing him and, recognizing his disadvantage, fled toward the ship, leaping inside. Nubs embraced him as they took off.

Back on Tenoo, the younglings landed just in time for the festival, presenting Yoda with the seeds. The Jedi Master identified them as sparkle-fire seeds, explaining their significance as a symbol of friendship between the Jedi and the galaxy. They served as a metaphor for younglings, who would mature into strength. Observing the moonlight, Yoda planted the seeds in soil at the opportune moment. They swiftly sprouted, emitting colorful fireworks, to the astonishment of all. During the ensuing festivities, Brightstar confessed to Yoda that he had lost his lightsaber. Yoda was not displeased but commended the youngling for his selfless act of helping others. He gifted Brightstar the lightsaber with which he had trained, expressing his pride in the young Jedi and his confidence in his future greatness.

One day, while training at the Temple, Brightstar was eager to practice with an advanced training droid. Solay discouraged him, but he believed they and Nubs could manage it, so he activated it. The droid brandished three lightsaber-like blades and began swinging them. The younglings struggled to parry its attacks, and Brightstar realized it might be too challenging, attempting to deactivate it but failing. All three tried to shut it down together, but their arms became entangled in the droid's appendages, forcing Brightstar to call Durango for help. When it released them, they were thrown to the ground, and it moved to strike Nubs. The Pooba raised his arm to brace for the blow, but it never came as Brightstar used the Force to suspend the droid's arm above Nubs.
Together, they each immobilized an arm, and Durango arrived. She had RJ-83 open the droid's hatch, and she pressed the button inside to shut it down. The Jedi hugged her in gratitude, but the training blocks on the course then began to topple—the younglings attempted to levitate them to avoid being crushed, but Master Yoda intervened, saving them himself. Brightstar explained Yoda's identity and significance to Durango, who was unfamiliar with him, and apologized to Yoda for the mess. Yoda was unconcerned, focusing on the fact that the Jedi and pilot had collaborated to resolve the problem, assigning them a mission. They departed in the Crimson Firehawk and jumped to hyperspace.

While Solay searched for an escaped tooka kitten, the creature disrupted Brightstar's lightsaber form practice, tripping him and sending him to the ground. It darted through his legs, and seconds later, Solay arrived, asking if he had seen the runaway feline. He was unfamiliar with tookas but indicated the direction the creature had taken. Solay thanked him and inadvertently knocked him down again, bumping into him as she hurried off that way.
Brightstar, Solay, and Nubs later embarked on a mission to retrieve a Zeilla flower for study at the Temple. They searched for it in the forests of Tenoo, splitting up for efficiency at Solay's suggestion. While searching, Nubs was launched into the air by a bird and landed in a tree near a Zeilla flower. Brightstar and Solay were relieved to see him once he landed, and Solay explained that the bird was drawn to the brightness of Nubs's ignited lightsaber. Nubs rode the bird to the flower and sliced it off—it floated slowly to the ground, where Solay caught it. Brightstar thanked Nubs for completing the mission, and they all laughed as the bird squawked.

Upon returning from a mission to retrieve a Jedi holocron in the Crimson Firehawk, Brightstar expressed his excitement to learn ancient Jedi history from the artifact and complimented Durango's piloting skills. The pilot agreed but acknowledged her copilot, RJ-83. She then emerged from hyperspace, but as soon as Tenoo came into view, Taborr Val Dorn fired several shots from behind them. He opened a comlink channel with the Jedi, announcing his intention to steal the holocron for himself. Durango instructed Brightstar to operate the cannons as she attempted to evade the pirates in Tenoo's asteroid field. Brightstar shot an opening between two close asteroids at Durango's direction, after which the Firehawk narrowly avoided the jaws of an exogorth. Executing another maneuver, Durango managed to lose the pirates but collided with an asteroid while gloating, resulting in a crash-landing near the Jedi Temple. The Jedi and pilot emerged dizzily, but Nubs had secured the holocron during the fighting, successfully delivering it to the Temple.

Brightstar, Solay, and Nubs were compelled to confront Val Dorn again when he stole all of the fruits a Nautolan shopkeeper was selling. They demanded he return everything, and when he refused, they used the Force to draw the cart of fruit toward them. Val Dorn ordered EB-3 to transport the cart to his ship and Pord to distract the Jedi—the Gamorrean disrupted their concentration, enabling EB-3 to move the cart. Brightstar tried to pursue him, but Val Dorn blocked his path, electrostaff at the ready. The two engaged in a duel, and Brightstar attempted to reassure Solay that he could handle the pirate.
However, Val Dorn knocked him to the ground, mocking the Jedi's failed attempt to stop him. Brightstar resolutely told his friends that they would not surrender, racing after the pirates. They used the Force to reclaim the cart, wrenching it from EB-3's grasp just as the hatch closed. They waved to the pirates and then delivered the cart to the Nautolan, who thanked them. Brightstar stated that he was happy to assist, especially when doing so with his friends. Nubs gave him and Solay a hug, which Brightstar still found overly tight.
For the Kublop Classic, a river race in Kublop Springs, the three younglings were part of Durango's team. They assisted their pilot friend in constructing her skiff, the Crimson Bolt, which Master Zanna complimented as she approached to speak to the younglings. Nubs accidentally dropped the skiff's sail into the river while demonstrating it to Zanna, so Brightstar helped him float it back into place. One of Durango's competitors, Raena Zess, then approached the Crimson Bolt—Solay asked Durango if Zess was the one who consistently defeated her in past races, against which Brightstar and Nubs cautioned her. Zess then showcased her own skiff and pit droid crew, which impressed the Jedi. Durango informed her opponent that her crew would have the advantage of the Jedi's Force powers, but after Zess departed, Zanna and Brightstar had to inform the pilot that they would not use the Force during the race.

Brightstar's responsibility on the skiff was to monitor the speed of the engine and brakes. Hap signaled the start of the race, and the skiffs sped off, darting down the river. Durango immediately requested more speed, which Brightstar provided. Zess, ahead of them, released smoke from her skiff to illegally obstruct her opponents' view. To counter this, Durango piloted up a tree root, bypassing the smoke. As the race progressed, the remaining two skiffs—Durango's and Zess's—approached a waterfall, so Durango gave instructions for speed and sail adjustments to enable them to descend it. While traversing the waterfall, sailing sideways, Nubs attempted to adjust the sail but nearly fell, clinging to it and causing the Crimson Bolt to become stuck in the mud. Zess also crashed, forcing all racers to exit their skiffs and assess the damage.

The Crimson Bolt team was unable to manually lift their skiff out of the mud, and Brightstar declined another request to do so with the Force. He reminded a dejected Durango that she had built a formidable skiff and was a skilled pilot, and Nubs gave her a hug. She then proposed collaborating with Zess, who scoffed, assuming that the Jedi could simply use the Force—Brightstar explained that they did not use their powers to cheat, which confused Zess, as she thought they had been doing so earlier in the race, prompting her to cheat. Attaching a tow cable from the Crimson Bolt to Zess's skiff, both teams were able to dislodge their vessels. The venture was successful, and the two skiffs raced to complete the final leg through the geyser field.
Durango used one of the erupting geysers to launch the skiff into the air, and Brightstar increased their speed to propel the Crimson Bolt to the finish line and secure first place. Hap presented the team with a Tenoo tree–shaped trophy, and Master Zanna congratulated them all on their victory and sportsmanship. The Jedi then celebrated their pilot, throwing her into the air in festivity.

Brightstar later trained with Master Yoda on using the Force to lift objects, practicing on a chunk of stone. The youngling struggled to lift the heavy stone—he made better progress after advice from Yoda, but he was interrupted by a chime from his comlink. Durango was calling him for help with recovering RJ, who had fallen into the river and was drifting away. With permission from Yoda, Brightstar quickly rode a speeder bike to the dock, where Durango was waiting. The pilot indicated the rapids where RJ was headed and joined Brightstar on the bike.
The two raced after the droid, nearly grabbing him but being stopped by the tree roots. They continued on foot, running along the riverbank, and Brightstar used the Force to move a large log to the edge of a waterfall. Durango, impressed, scurried across the log and nabbed her droid just before he plunged down the waterfall. She thanked Brightstar, who was happy to help. Back at the Temple, Brightstar was having far more success with lifting the heavy stone, acknowledging that Yoda's advice to trust in himself and the Force had been spot-on.
Master Zanna later took a group of younglings, including Brightstar, to the ancient Temple Library, which was undergoing repairs. Brightstar, eager to learn about Jedi of the Old Republic, rushed off to the Jedi history section. He amassed a large stack of holobooks, carrying the precarious pile and attempting to add a volume on kyber crystals of the planet Ilum to it. However, he slipped while removing the book from its shelf and fell, scattering the books everywhere. On the other side of the shelf, through the hole he had created, he saw a glowing stack of stones. He became intrigued, as did Nubs and Solay when they came by him.

The group of three circled the shelf, investigating by using the Force to shift the rocks. This revealed a path to an ancient Jedi storage area, which they entered. Among the items inside, Brightstar discovered a star map pointing to a specific planet. Unable to decipher its meaning, they presented the map to Zanna, who was astonished by their discovery. She clarified that it served as a device for locating lost starships and, upon pressing a button, a hologram of a ship appeared. With surprise, she recognized it as the Star Seeker, a vessel Brightstar had read about—a courageous explorer had previously used it to chart the Tenoo's sector centuries ago, before disappearing years prior. At the urging of the younglings, Zanna permitted them to search for the Star Seeker, leading Durango to pick them up and initiate a hyperspace jump to the nearby planet.
En route, the Jedi briefed Durango on their objective, causing him to be delighted and spontaneously burst into a cheerful song about it, which puzzled the younglings, although Brightstar enjoyed it. They eventually arrived at the planet, exiting hyperspace directly into an asteroid field. Brightstar and Solay took on lookout duties, while Nubs operated the cannons, enabling Durango to navigate the field safely. After landing, the Jedi followed the signal into a dense green fog, where they encountered a droid who demanded they leave.
They employed the Force to disperse the fog, revealing the Star Seeker in a nearby clearing. The droid, visibly nervous, inquired if they were Jedi. They confirmed this and explained they had been following the tracker. Relieved, he identified himself as 0G-LC and welcomed the younglings aboard his ship. During the tour, Brightstar hesitantly asked about the fate of the pilot—0G-LC, perplexed, informed Brightstar that he was the pilot. He recounted his adventures on behalf of the Jedi Order and how he had crash-landed on the planet due to the asteroids, prematurely ending his mission to Tenoo. The Jedi eagerly offered to assist in repairing the Star Seeker, but 0G revealed he had completed the repairs years ago. However, he was too afraid to attempt the mission again, retreating in shame.

The others, including Brightstar, decided he needed encouragement and went after him. Brightstar told 0G that feeling fear was a normal emotion that even Jedi experience, adding that confronting those fears was what truly mattered. 0G-LC resolved to be brave, so Durango joined them at the clearing, where they devised a plan to depart the planet: the Jedi would assist 0G in piloting, while he followed Durango in the Crimson Firehawk. Both ships launched, but 0G was overcome with anxiety when two asteroids aligned in the same manner that had caused his crash. Brightstar offered supportive words to the droid, and the Star Seeker successfully navigated through an opening, leaving the asteroid field behind.
The younglings celebrated, and they eventually made their way back to Tenoo, where 0G-LC gifted the Temple with an artifact he had discovered. Brightstar expressed that the droid would be missed when he resumed his explorations, although they would always be able to track him using the star map. The Jedi and Durango happily waved goodbye to their friend as he departed in the Star Seeker.
One morning during breakfast, Brightstar was enjoying some muffins that he thought were delicious and tried to recommend them to Solay. However, his fellow youngling was not interested in pastries and was instead observing a bifflefly outside the cafeteria window. Brightstar acknowledged the creature but encouraged his friend to eat, but she remained transfixed until Brightstar held a muffin directly in front of her face. She gave in and admitted that the treats were indeed tasty, which reminded them of Nubs—it was unusual for him to miss a meal.

They went to check on him and discovered the Pooba sneezing repeatedly. They were saddened by his illness, as that night was the annual eruption of the Kublop Geyser. Nubs opened a holobook and showed his friends a picture of the Yara plant, whose tea was believed to cure colds. The journey to the giant Tenoo tree where the plant grew would be long, but Brightstar and Solay were determined to go, pleading with Zanna for permission. She granted their request but cautioned them, reminding Solay to be mindful and Brightstar to be more patient. Zanna also allowed them to use the Temple's speeders, which they quickly departed on before she could say goodbye.
The pair sped down the river, competing to reach the tree as quickly as possible. As they traveled, Solay became distracted by several flitterpods darting in and out of the water beside her and would have crashed into a tree root if Brightstar had not warned her to move. She promised to be more focused going forward, and they continued on. The Jedi soon arrived at a fork in the river, unsure of which way to go. Brightstar immediately assumed that they should continue in the same direction they had been traveling. Solay suggested waiting and observing, which frustrated the impatient Brightstar.

However, leaves from a giant Tenoo tree soon floated toward them from around the riverbend, leading them to conclude that the tree was in that direction instead; Brightstar was grateful he had listened to Solay's advice. After taking that path at the fork, they left the river and continued on land until they reached the base of the enormous tree. Brightstar and Solay, amazed by the tree's towering stature that reached the clouds, began to climb. As they ascended, Brightstar slipped and nearly fell to his death, but Solay used the Force to reposition some foliage on the tree to cushion his fall. They continued, using grappling hooks to climb certain sections and walking sideways on narrow ledges for others. During one such section, Brightstar jumped instead of walking carefully, again nearly falling if Solay had not caught him.
Brightstar kept Solay from being distracted by creatures as they progressed up the climb, though he himself slipped and was caught by his friend once more. They swung across an opening using vines and eventually reached the top using their hooks. Solay, noticing gangul pawprints, warned Brightstar to be quiet, but he ran noisily toward a Yara plant he spotted. The gangul noticed and rushed toward Brightstar, growling, and began to chase the Jedi around. Solay was admiring the creature until a panicked Brightstar told her to grab the leaves, diving for cover inside a tree. When she, too, began to be chased by the gangul, Solay hid with Brightstar, unable to retrieve the leaves.

The Jedi reflected that they had not heeded each other's advice. They realized that they had been most successful when they listened to one another, so Brightstar followed Solay's example and paused to consider his next action. He used the Force to distract the gangul, allowing Solay to sneak out of the tree crevice and grab the leaves. She then accidentally snapped a twig, alerting the gangul and causing it to chase her, ready to attack. However, Brightstar jumped in between them, lightsaber activated, to defend his friend. Solay lit hers as well, scaring the gangul away. They hurried back to Nubs, who felt much better after drinking the tea. The Jedi all watched the geyser erupt together, with the trio embracing as they marveled at the shooting water.

The three younglings, along with Durango, were once enjoying some drinks at Hap's Sap Tap, where Brightstar ordered an Alphaberry Sap-Shake. He thanked Hap for the drink, which he found delicious after taking a sip. They then saw a Chadra-Fan pick up a basket of fruit from Hap, but she dropped one and tripped, scattering the fruits everywhere. Durango and the Jedi helped recover her lunch, and the pilot introduced the Chadra-Fan, Marlaa Jinara, to her friends. She was grateful for the kids' help but had to quickly return to her junkyard, where someone had been stealing her junk. The Jedi and pilot offered to help catch the thief, which Jinara accepted, leading the way back to her beloved junkyard.
Brightstar was puzzled by Jinara's fascination with junk, so she explained that each piece of junk was unique and could be transformed into new items, showcasing her junk-made artwork and home. Jinara, upset by the theft, told the younglings that the thief had recently escalated from stealing small pieces of junk to taking the gears from her servo-lifter, which prevented her from moving heavy pieces of junk. Solay noticed a trail of oil, which the group deduced was left behind by the thief. They followed the oil, leaving Nubs to assist Jinara with the heavy junk in place of her servo-lifter.

Brightstar, Solay, and Durango soon reached the end of the oil trail, but RJ-83 detected activity in a nearby building, which they stealthily entered. They discovered Taborr's gang putting the finishing touches on a contraption made from the stolen junk, intending to use it to steal more items. However, Brightstar and the others interrupted their plans, announcing they would return the junk to Jinara. The pirates laughed at the idea, activating what they had named the Junk Giant. Val Dorn revealed his intention to steal the statue of Tenoo's founder, Kaliah Kublop, and ordered his droid to prevent the Jedi from following him, before exiting.
The Junk Giant lifted the crate on which Brightstar was standing as his friends scattered. He panicked briefly but then flipped backward to the ground. The droid then left, blocking the exit with a large piece of machinery. The machinery was too heavy for them to move either manually or with the Force, so they used the remaining junk to construct a device that could lift it out of the way. They celebrated and hurried to the Kaliah Kublop statue, which the pirates were in the process of stealing. Brightstar demanded that Val Dorn return the statue, but the pirate had his Junk Giant attack the Jedi and Durango. Brightstar and Solay jumped onto the droid, searching for a power-off switch, but they were unable to find it. However, Brightstar managed to cause the droid to break off its left hand when he dodged its strike.

Val Dorn, running out of options, declared his Junk Giant to be useless, ordered it to prevent the Jedi from following him and his pirates, and fled. It moved toward them and the gathered villagers, but just before it struck them, Brightstar jumped in between and insisted that fighting was unnecessary. It paused its attack, so Brightstar continued, asserting that all junk was special and that the droid did not need to fight or steal. The others agreed, and the droid picked up the fallen statue and returned it to its pedestal.
Brightstar and Solay returned to the junkyard, announcing their arrival to Jinara and revealing the junk's new form: the Junk Giant, with Durango and RJ as its passengers. Jinara admired the droid and offered it a job at her junkyard moving heavy junk, which it accepted. She then renamed it "JG-1," because it was a Junk Giant who was one of a kind. Jinara thanked the kids for their help, and Brightstar admitted that she had been right—broken junk was not useless.
Brightstar, Solay, Nubs, and Durango traveled to the snowy planet Andraven, sent by Master Zanna. They began their visit to the local villagers by learning to ride the wellagrin creatures, at which Solay excelled, while Brightstar and Nubs struggled. The locals Gumar and Jam were impressed by Solay's quick learning as Brightstar fell off and was licked by his wellagrin. Jam told Brightstar that the wellagrin liked him with a laugh, and the trainer, Varna, offered advice for riding. She then received a holocall from Zanna, who wanted to check in on the younglings. Varna decided they were ready to assist Gumar and Jam with the wellagrins' migration to the food-rich other side of the mountain.

Varna and Zanna gave the younglings advice before they departed, trudging through the snow up the mountain. Brightstar was amazed that the wellagrins could swim within the snow, but Nubs then noticed two heading toward a cliff. Gumar, unfazed, took out an Andraven flute and played it, coaxing the creatures back toward him. Jam also attempted to play his but was less successful, and he offered flutes to each Jedi to try. Brightstar was discouraged that he sounded like a sick bantha, a creature native to the planet Tatooine, when he tried, but Gumar assured him that he would improve with practice.
Solay noticed one wellagrin, Snowball, straying from the trail, so she tried her flute to get him back. However, her out-of-tune notes caused the wellagrins to stampede, which triggered an avalanche. The group hurried to reach higher ground for their safety, escaping the worst of the falling snow. Brightstar consoled Solay, who felt responsible for losing the wellagrins, assuring her that they would still be able to recover the creatures. He suggested splitting up for efficiency and eventually found one of the herd, but when he was unable to move the stationary beast, he called Solay for help. She and Gumar rejoined the others, where she lured the wellagrin toward her by waving berries at it. The group soon found the rest of the herd: one upturned Brightstar by popping out of the snow, while another required the three Jedi's Force powers to move.
At the top of the mountain—their halfway point—Gumar emphasized the importance of returning before nightfall. However, Solay noticed that Jam had disappeared, so she and the rest of the group called out for him. When there was no response, Solay became overwhelmed and panicked. Nubs and Brightstar reminded her of Zanna's advice to take a deep breath in difficult situations. The Jedi sat down together and focused, meditating briefly before Solay thought to signal Jam using the flute. She played hers twice before Jam heard, responding with his own tootling. They rushed toward the noise, continuing to play the flute until Jam was found.

Brightstar cheered Solay on her success, but as Gumar and Jam ran toward each other, they cracked the ice, causing another avalanche down the mountain's steep face. Solay instructed the others to hop on a wellagrin, which Brightstar, Nubs, and Gumar were able to do. However, Jam had trouble, and after slipping from Gumar's hand, he was rescued by Solay, who pulled him onto her steed. Brightstar—now better at wellagrin-riding—and the others safely landed at the orchard to which they were headed, delivering the wellagrins before dark. That night, they sat around a heater as Solay reported on the mission to Zanna. Jam then started a snowball fight in which all the kids participated.
On a training day, Brightstar, Solay, and Nubs were tasked with retrieving a beacon from a training droid within a limited time. As Yoda and Zanna watched, Brightstar attempted to create an opening, but he slipped on a stray log as time ran out. Disappointed that he was unable to complete the objective in front of Yoda, the Jedi Masters advised patience. Yoda activated the droid and began to spar with it, calmly waiting for an opportunity before leaping to grab the beacon, impressing the students. The droid Dee then arrived to take Yoda and Zanna, the latter of whom asked the younglings to clean up the course in their absence. Brightstar suggested further training to prove themselves upon the masters' return, but Solay reminded him of their task.

Therefore, he reset the droids, teaching them to clean up the field for them by demonstrating how to stack the stones. Before long, they had cleaned the entire course, but as the Jedi began to celebrate, the droids flew off in search of more items to stack. The Jedi followed, finding the droids stacking plates of food in the Temple cafeteria. They then split up, with each Jedi tailing a droid—Brightstar tried to stop his but ended up being dragged toward the other droids and Jedi when he was unsuccessful. He called Durango for advice at Solay's suggestion, desperately requesting help. The droids went outside toward the Firehawk as it landed, stacking all of the items in it once Durango opened the hatch.
To prevent the droids from heading for Kublop Springs, Brightstar intentionally knocked over some items to distract them, leading them with his friends back to the practice field, where Nubs blocked off the entrance. Brightstar then remembered Yoda's lesson, employing patience to power off one of the droids. Nubs handled the second, and the entire group shut down the third. Yoda and Zanna then returned, finding a mess strewn about the course. Dee had informed them of the situation, so Brightstar apologized. Yoda reiterated his advice, and the Jedi set off to clean the area themselves this time. Once they were done, Yoda offered to train with the younglings, and the four were able to snatch the beacon from the droid by working together.

For the Jellyfruit Festival, the Jedi and Durango assisted Hap in decorating his restaurant. However, as they were preparing, they received a transmission from jellyfruit farmer Weebo that pirates had stolen their entire crop. Upon further investigation, they determined that it was Taborr Val Dorn and his crew, who were likely headed toward Yarrum. Brightstar believed it would be easy to go down and retrieve the jellyfruit, but Durango advised them to change their appearance to resemble pirates rather than Jedi. They disguised themselves in makeshift costumes after they landed, which Durango found mostly unconvincing but adequate.
The group made their way to the marketplace, adopting tough, piratelike expressions to blend in. Brightstar was not entirely successful at this, and he accidentally broke a teapot in his attempt, angering a Chagrian shopkeeper. Soon after, Durango tripped after bumping into a burly Abednedo named Chigg, who was enjoying a jellyfruit. Durango was initially frightened of him, but he was friendly and helped her up. He pointed in the direction of Val Dorn when Brightstar asked where he had obtained the fruit.

They approached the pirates' fruit stand, where Val Dorn—not recognizing the Jedi—tossed Brightstar a fruit. As he attempted to catch it, the youngling tripped and lost his helmet, revealing his identity. Disgusted by the Jedi's presence, Val Dorn rushed back to his ship with Pord and EB-3. The Jedi and Durango gave chase, maneuvering around obstacles the pirates placed in their path. The pirates taunted the Jedi as they pursued them, which distracted the thieves and knocked them off the box of jellyfruit. The pirates were unharmed, but the fruit continued sliding toward the edge of a dock and nearly fell into the ocean below.
Working together, the three younglings used the Force to pull the crate back onto the dock, much to Durango's delight. Solay criticized Val Dorn for stealing from an elderly grandmother, which the other pirates of Yarrum found unimpressive, laughing at Val Dorn. As RJ landed the Firehawk, the younglings prepared to depart, but reluctantly, Durango approached Val Dorn and his crew, who were sulking away. In the spirit of the Jellyfruit Festival, she offered him a jellyfruit, and he confusedly thanked her, refusing to share with Pord.
Back on Tenoo, many gathered at Hap's Sap Tap to celebrate. They enjoyed various jellyfruit and cheered for the kids, who had saved the festival, and sang the "jelly jingle," which described the fruit's characteristics.
The Jedi joined the Safari droid SF-R3 ("Aree") of the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts on one of his missions to document and broadcast creatures of the galaxy, traveling to the planet Yamradi. Brightstar and the others greeted the audience through Aree's cam droid, CAM. The mission's objective was to learn about the Chylaroo, which Solay, as a creature enthusiast, was particularly excited about. They soon found a trio of Chylaroos, with whom they played and observed. Meanwhile, CAM had wandered off and been captured by a bird, who flew over the Jedi and Aree with its prize. Noticing their friend in danger, they chased after the bird but lost sight of it.

Brightstar and his companions made a promise to Aree: they would locate CAM. Their initial strategy involved checking the nearby trees for any signs of nests. During this search, Nubs lost his footing and tumbled downwards. However, Brightstar and Solay reacted swiftly, using the Force to gently halt his descent just before he hit the earth. Following a trail of shed feathers, Solay discovered a burrow, which she deduced was the bird's dwelling. Entering the burrow, they ignited their lightsabers to illuminate their path, eventually finding a nest with CAM nestled inside. Overjoyed, Aree hurried to embrace his unharmed friend. As they attempted to leave, the bird became aware of their presence and defensively spread its wings, attempting to reclaim CAM. The resulting gusts of wind from the flapping wings propelled the Jedi outside, leaving the droids within the burrow.
Solay began to contemplate the best way to rescue the droids. She hypothesized that the bird had taken CAM because of his resemblance to the shiny berries from Yamradi. They gathered several dozen of these berries and adorned Brightstar and Nubs with them, hoping to create a diversion that would allow Solay to swiftly enter and retrieve the droids. As the plan unfolded, the bird, as anticipated, pursued the berry-covered younglings, giving Solay the opportunity to locate the droids, safe and sound. It turned out the bird was simply gathering food for its offspring. The bird carried Brightstar and Nubs back to the nest, where the young birds began to lick the berry-covered Jedi, causing them to giggle. As a gesture of gratitude, Aree bestowed upon Solay the honor of naming the new species, which she christened "burrowberry birds."
Kai Brightstar was a human boy characterized by his dark complexion, brown eyes, and brown hair. He possessed Force-sensitive abilities and had a solid understanding of lightsaber combat. Brightstar's strong desire to learn the ways of the Force sometimes led him into situations for which he was not adequately prepared.
As a young Jedi initiate, Brightstar typically wore the traditional gold and yellow Jedi robes common during the High Republic Era, along with green fingerless gloves and an orange cloak. Initially, he wielded a blue single-bladed lightsaber, but after losing it, he replaced it with Yoda's old green training lightsaber.
The character of Kai Brightstar was created for the 2023 Disney Junior and Disney+ animated television show Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures. Jamaal Avery Jr. provides the voice for Brightstar. He auditioned for the part of Brightstar during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the lockdown restrictions, Avery Jr. auditioned for the role while inside his father's closet. During an interview with Kristin Baver, Avery Jr. mentioned that he found the character relatable, commenting, "He's outgoing. He approaches every situation with optimism and a positive attitude."
Avery also expressed his hope that the series, particularly the friendship between Brightstar and Juliet Donenfeld's character Lys Solay, would emphasize to children the importance of seeking assistance from friends and family when facing challenges. He noted that Brightstar had a tendency to handle everything independently and was hesitant to ask for help. Solay's character served as a reminder that it was acceptable to accept help from others.
In 2024, it was announced that JeCobi Swain would join Avery in providing voices for Kai Brightstar for a portion of the final episodes of season one.
