An insurrection against the First Order erupted throughout the First Order's controlled regions of space, challenging its military dominance over the entire galaxy. This revolt was sparked by the Resistance's triumph on Exegol, where the Sith Eternal's grand fleet, known as the Final Order, met its end alongside the resurrected Sith Lord Darth Sidious. As the Resistance celebrated this Sith demise on the world of Ajan Kloss, other planets openly defied the cult's allies, the First Order, launching attacks against their forces on planets like Bespin, Endor, Jakku, Naboo, Corellia, Lothal, Thyferra, and even Coruscant.
Having emerged from the uncharted Unknown Regions to assert military control over the galaxy, the First Order, born from the remnants of the fallen Galactic Empire, successfully conquered and governed vast areas of the galaxy. Following the New Republic's collapse due to a devastating First Order attack, First Order armadas and ground forces spread across the galaxy. To avoid direct conflict, entire planets and systems submitted to its military branch, while elsewhere, surviving New Republic senators and commanding officers disbanded their remaining military units to protect their respective home planets, thus fragmenting the galaxy. However, the Resistance stood in opposition to the First Order, striving to inspire rebellion, dismantle the First Order, and reinstate the New Republic. During the First Order's chase of the Resistance, Kylo Ren murdered and replaced Supreme Leader Snoke; however, he ultimately failed to seize the Resistance due to the selfless act of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, which allowed the Resistance to prolong their conflict against the First Order and galvanize others.
Later, Supreme Leader Ren discovered a still-living Darth Sidious, formerly the Galactic Emperor, on Exegol, along with a devoted cult and an enormous military ready to bring the galaxy under the sway of a new Sith Empire by force, utilizing the Final Order, a massive fleet of Sith Star Destroyers armed with technology capable of planetary destruction. Sidious, who revealed himself as the mastermind behind Snoke and the First Order, offered Ren control of the Sith fleet in exchange for killing Rey, his granddaughter and the last Jedi. Ultimately, however, Ren rejected the dark side and the First Order, embracing his original identity as Ben Solo. Nevertheless, Allegiant General Enric Pryde reaffirmed his allegiance to the Dark Lord, who then commanded the Sith fleet to prepare for deployment across the galaxy.

Having discovered a secure route to Exegol, the Resistance assaulted the hidden Sith planet to prevent the Sith fleet's deployment. The Resistance received reinforcements from a Citizens' Fleet, consisting of thousands of volunteer vessels from across the galaxy, led by General Lando Calrissian. Together, they annihilated the entire Sith fleet, including Allegiant General Pryde and his flagship. Concurrently, Rey channeled the power of past Jedi to defeat Sidious, sacrificing herself in the process, only to be revived by Solo, who gave his own life to save her. Following their victory, the Resistance and their allies withdrew from Exegol, during which time General Finn learned of widespread uprisings across the galaxy and shared this information with General Poe Dameron.
Throughout the galaxy, the First Order's military forces faced attacks from the very populations they had subjugated. Open rebellions broke out on numerous planets, including Bespin, Jakku, Endor, Coruscant, Naboo, Corellia, Lothal, and Thyferra. At least one First Order Star Destroyer was destroyed on each of the planets Bespin, Jakku, and Endor. The revolt on Endor was witnessed by Galactic Civil War veteran Wicket W. Warrick, an Ewok, and his son, Pommet.
Ultimately, this uprising led to the First Order's downfall. With the war concluded, the galaxy's inhabitants embarked on the challenging and lengthy process of rebuilding, as understood by historian and Resistance operative Beaumont Kin, even months after the Battle of Exegol. Simultaneously, Kin supervised the excavation of the Sith Eternal temple on Exegol and authored the book The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire.
Meanwhile, in the aftermath of the Battle of Exegol, Rey journeyed to Luke's former home, Tatooine, to bury his and Leia Organa's lightsabers. During her stay, she adopted the surname "Skywalker," becoming a Jedi Master and dedicating herself to restoring peace. By 50 ABY, she was actively rebuilding the Jedi Order as the "New Jedi Order," in a time period known as the "New Jedi Order Era." However, emerging powers challenged Skywalker's endeavors, hoping to eliminate the Jedi before their restoration was complete.
The uprising against the First Order serves as the final conflict in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. It made its debut in the 2019 film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker.
