The cosmos transitioned into a fresh epoch with the establishment of a reimagined Jedi Order by none other than Rey Skywalker, the esteemed Jedi Master who, alongside her allies in the Resistance, decisively brought an end to the Sith's oppressive reign at the climactic Battle of Exegol in the year 35 ABY. Rey played a crucial role in guiding Ben Solo back from his descent into the Force's dark side, a fall that abruptly terminated Luke Skywalker's initial endeavor to reconstruct the Jedi Order and inadvertently fueled the rise of the First Order, the neo-Imperialist power structure that violently shattered the brief era of peace and democracy known as the New Republic Era. Following the downfall of the First Order, Rey committed herself to upholding the Jedi heritage of the Skywalker family and undertaking the rebuilding of the Jedi.

For countless ages, the Jedi Order functioned as the galaxy's protectors of serenity and righteousness, serving as the guardians of the Galactic Republic, and engaging in conflict against their eternal adversaries, the Sith, formerly comrades within the Force. As the Sith annihilated one another in their internal struggles for dominance, the Jedi emerged triumphant, standing as the victors of their prolonged war. Nevertheless, the Sith endured through only Darth Bane, who reconstructed the Sith under the Rule of Two, secretly devising a scheme to obliterate the Jedi and the Republic.
Despite the Jedi's conviction that the Sith had been eradicated, the Sith Lord Darth Sidious and his apprentice, Darth Maul, revealed their presence to the Jedi. Ultimately, former Jedi Master Count Dooku aligned himself with Sidious, instigating the Clone Wars and unleashing chaos throughout the galaxy. Anakin Skywalker, a Jedi Knight prophesied to be the Chosen One, succumbed to the dark side of the Force in a desperate attempt to preserve the life of his wife, Padmé Amidala, transforming into Darth Vader under the tutelage of Darth Sidious. Together, they annihilated nearly all Jedi across the galaxy, leading to their near extinction, and dismantled the Republic, replacing it with the Galactic Empire.
In the years subsequent to the Battle of Yavin, the Rebel Alliance overthrew the Sith-controlled autocracy that had corrupted the Republic's democracy and freedoms, aided by Luke Skywalker, a farmer who became a rebel and was trained by Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and Grand Master Yoda, survivors of the Jedi Purge. Skywalker heeded Yoda's counsel to impart the Jedi way to a new generation, including Ben Solo, the son of Han and Luke's sibling Leia, while Leia concentrated on assisting the Rebellion's transition into the New Republic. The Jedi Order had not regained its former prominence as guardians of the Republic when Ben Solo obliterated his uncle's new Jedi Order on the planet Ossus in 28 ABY, succumbing to the allure of power offered by Snoke and the dark side of the Force, and becoming Kylo Ren, a leader within the First Order. This Order was a clandestine neo-Imperialist entity controlled by the Sith cult of the ousted Emperor, Darth Sidious.

The First Order decimated the New Republic and swiftly seized control of the galaxy in 34 ABY, while Rey, who had only known life as a forager before enlisting in the Resistance during the struggle against the First Order, sought instruction from Luke Skywalker. Having become disillusioned with the Jedi's ideals, Luke Skywalker was inspired by Rey's persistence, giving her basic training and appearing at the Battle of Crait, declaring that the rebellion would be reborn through his sacrifice as a Jedi, and that he himself would not be the last Jedi.
With revitalized inspiration and hope, the Resistance followed the leadership of General Leia Organa. Rey also mastered the Jedi ways from her before confronting Ben Solo, persuading the troubled soul to relinquish his burden to the dark side and join Rey and her allies in the fight against the Sith. They ultimately succeeded at the Battle of Exegol in 35 ABY with the support of the Citizens' Fleet and the self-sacrifice of Ben Solo.
With the Sith's tyranny finally concluded, the galaxy entered a dark era to be shaped by the Force. The destruction of the New Republic and the power vacuum left behind by the First Order has spawned new conflicts as chaos spread across the galaxy. On the planet Tatooine, Rey chose to carry on the Jedi legacy of the Skywalker family. Jedi Master Rey Skywalker is now working on building a new Jedi Order to restore peace. Rising powers present in the galaxy opposed Skywalker's efforts to restore the Jedi Order.
The "New Jedi Order" was first mentioned as an era in the current canon continuity on StarWars.com in 2023, set after the sequel trilogy. In the same year, Lucasfilm used the partly capitalized term "new Jedi Order" when announcing the upcoming Star Wars film by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy that would be set during Rey's building of a new Jedi Order after the events of the 2019 sequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker. Following The Rise of Skywalker's release, the slideshow for the Force's entry in the Databank feature on StarWars.com stated that Rey had ushered in "a new era, to be shaped by the Force in ways as yet unknown."
Within the current canon, the fully capitalized term "New Jedi Order" was mentioned in the 2017 forty-sixth issue of the Star Wars Helmet Collection magazine to refer to the new generation of Jedi trained by Luke Skywalker, whereas 2021's Star Wars: The Tiny Book of Jedi uses "THE NEW JEDI ORDER" as the heading for Luke Skywalker's sacrifice at the Battle of Crait, when he declared that he "will not be the last Jedi" in the so-named 2017 sequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi. The 2020 reference book The Star Wars Book clarifies that the Jedi Order that Luke Skywalker was trying to rebuild did not reach its former heights, and the 2021 book Star Wars: The Secrets of the Sith similarly refers to Luke Skywalker and his students as "the new Jedi Order that was rising" from Darth Sidious' perspective.
