Bespin, situated within the Anoat sector in its namesake star system, was a gas giant whose wealth stemmed from the abundance of a unique gas called tibanna. While attracting mining operations and maintaining neutrality in galactic affairs, Ugnaughts were employed to extract tibanna from repulsorlifted platforms. The majority of Bespin's population, primarily human, lived in the upper levels, where they were exposed to a sparse, breathable atmosphere in what was known as a "Life Zone."

Within the desolate Anoat sector of the galaxy, you could find the massive gas giant that was Bespin. This planet possessed two moons. Though it lacked any solid land or water, its gaseous composition included a thin layer of breathable atmosphere situated above a reserve of the valuable tibanna gas. Bespin took 14 standard-years to complete its orbit around its parent star, and 12 standard-hours to complete a single rotation. Observers in Cloud City's upper regions, within the breathable atmospheric layer, would witness sunsets lasting two hours.
Various mining facilities processed tibanna gas, notably the magnificent Cloud City, which floated amidst the planet's vast, billowing clouds, in addition to Chinook Station, a refueling and fuel depot. Ugnorgrad, the city of the Ugnaught people, was also positioned above the planet, under the rule of King Ozz following the Battle of Endor. The tibanna processed in Cloud City was intended for off-world sale.
Unusually for a gas giant, Bespin supported diverse lifeforms. It also had two sister worlds, separated from it by an asteroid belt known as Velser's Ring.
Swimming pools were considered an extreme luxury on Bespin.
Bespin remained neutral during the Galactic Civil War, but this did not stop the Galactic Empire from garrisoning it and taking control of Cloud City. However, with the Empire's defeat at Endor, the gas giant and its thriving mining colony regained their independence.
By 35 ABY, after the Battle of Exegol, Bespin was engaged in open rebellion against the First Order.
Bespin's debut was in the 1980 film, Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. However, its initial mention occurred in Star Wars Official Poster Monthly 18, as a preview for the Star Wars saga's second installment. This issue was released in March of 1979. The first draft of The Empire Strikes Back featured a beautiful planet, Besspin Kaalieda, that resembled a jewel.
According to both the Encyclopedia and the Databank entries for Bespin on StarWars.com, the gas giant was "surrounded by a number of moons." However, Star Wars: Complete Locations, which came out in 2016, specifies that the planet had two moons.
