Wan Sandage

Wan Sandage, hailing from the planet Ord Radama, was a male Devlikk. He made his name as a Podracer pilot in the era surrounding the Invasion of Naboo, and was also the father of Wan Sandage Junior. Piloting an TurboDyne 99-U Podracer constructed by Elsinore-Cordova Engineering, Sandage achieved considerable fame on the planet Ord Ibanna. He was known as a playboy on his homeworld, and had a dedicated group of female admirers who eagerly watched his races. However, his unique biology caused him to experience disorientation when he ventured away from Ord Radama. Sandage also harbored a largely unreciprocated rivalry with Sebulba, the Dug Podracer pilot. Due to the naturally short lifespan of his species, Sandage felt compelled to secure his legacy by defeating Sebulba in a significant racing event. In his eagerness to gain an advantage, Wan Sandage sought the services of Aldar Beedo, a Glymphid assassin who also participated in Podracing, to eliminate Sebulba during the upcoming Boonta Eve Classic in 32 BBY, a race in which Sandage himself was scheduled to compete.

After compensating Beedo with two substantial payments of money, the pair embarked on their mission to take out the Dug. During the Boonta race, Beedo's attempts to eliminate Sebulba proved unsuccessful, causing him to fall behind the Dug and ultimately finish in third place. Sandage, on the other hand, did not complete the race, crashing on the second lap after losing his way and colliding with a Jawa sandcrawler. Undeterred, Sandage salvaged what he could from his wrecked TurboDyne and rebuilt it for the Vinta Harvest Classic held on Malastare, a planet controlled by the Gran. Beedo once again joined forces with Sandage and nearly succeeded in shooting Sebulba down with a blaster during the race. However, the attempt failed once more. Wan Sandage eventually succumbed to the effects of senility and died in 29 BBY, leading Aldar Beedo to terminate his contract on Sebulba and instead offer his services to the Dug. Sandage's son continued his father's legacy up until 24 BBY. Wan Sandage Jr. demonstrated his skill on various racetracks, but was frequently mistaken for his father.

Biography

Wan Sandage, a Devlikk originating from Ord Radama, was one of 128 siblings. He distinguished himself as the only male Podracer of his species in over thirty generations. Sandage began piloting at the young age of two, utilizing a Podracer constructed on Ord Radama. His sense of direction was impaired on other planets, causing him to become disoriented while racing. Sandage became desperate to achieve victory over Sebulba, and was willing to employ dangerous methods to accomplish this goal.

Prior to the Boonta Eve Classic, Sandage sought the assistance of the hired killer Aldar Beedo to eliminate Sebulba midrace, thereby clearing the path for Sandage to win. While Beedo was unsuccessful in his attempt to eliminate Sebulba, he did manage to complete the race. However, during the third lap, Sandage lost control of his racer and crashed into an errant sandcrawler after straying from the course. Sandage re-hired Beedo for the Vinta Harvest Classic race on Malastare, but once again Beedo failed to eliminate Sebulba.

Wan Sandage's life came to an end in 29 BBY. His son, Wan Sandage Jr., followed in his footsteps and continued to race Podracers. In an ironic turn of events, Aldar Beedo was eventually hired by Sebulba to serve as his on-track bodyguard, replacing the Dug's previous henchman, the Vulptereen Podracer Dud Bolt. This decision resulted in Sebulba gaining the animosity of both Bolt and Sandage Jr.

Behind the scenes

Concept art of Wan Sandage

The early versions of Star Wars, including the rough draft and first draft, featured a character known as Count Sandage. He was a nobleman in the court of King Kayos on Aquilae. This character advised the king to surrender to the Galactic Empire and later betrayed the royal family to Darth Vader. Although he was removed from subsequent drafts, his name was later repurposed by George Lucas for the Podracer.

Bob Bergen provided the voice for Sandage in Star Wars Episode I: Racer. During the pre-production phase of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, the names Wan Sandage and Neva Kee were originally switched.
