The short story "We Don't Do Weddings: The Band's Tale" by Kathy Tyers can be found in Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina, a collection released in August of 1995 by Bantam Spectra; it centers around Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes. The events unfold in 0 BBY. Notably, this story is the first of two from the anthology that received a full-cast audio drama adaptation.
Figrin D'an along with the other members of the Modal Nodes are part of the Intergalactic Federation of Musicians, specializing in the musical genre called jizz. While performing gigs on Tatooine, they agree to an exclusive arrangement to work only for the crime boss Jabba the Hutt. However, Figrin desires to terminate this agreement.
Lady Valarian, a Whiphid and rival of Jabba's, dispatches an E522 assassin droid to Jabba's Palace with the mission of hiring Figrin D'an. Valarian's offer is 3,000 credits for the band to play at her wedding to the Whiphid hunter, D'Wopp. Figrin sees this as a golden opportunity to acquire enough funds to book passage away from Tatooine and free himself from Jabba the Hutt's control, even considering the temptations of Valarian's Sabacc games.
The band secretly travels to Mos Eisley and sets up their instruments at the Star Chamber Café, located inside Valarian's popular Lucky Despot Hotel & Casino. They begin performing at the wedding celebration, but during breaks, Figrin starts gambling away the band's earnings at the Sabacc tables.
Upon discovering this contract violation, Jabba sends several of his thugs to the Lucky Despot to disrupt the wedding. This also presents Jabba with a chance to undermine his rival's operations. Coincidentally, Imperial stormtroopers also conduct a raid on the casino. The band quickly packs up their equipment and flees outside.
Doikk Na'ts, the Dorenian Beshniquel player, has a discussion with Wuher, a scruffy Human who is a guest at the party. Wuher extends an invitation to the band to perform at his establishment nearby – Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina. The Modal Nodes accept the offer, but they make it clear that they intend to leave the desert planet at the first available chance.
