Yihyoung Li, a freelance illustrator of Taiwanese-American descent, was born in Dallas, Texas, which is located in the United States. He has contributed to the Star Wars universe by producing illustrations and covers for books related to the Star Wars: The High Republic project, a multimedia endeavor.
Born in Dallas, Texas, within the United States, Yihyoung Li is a Taiwanese-American illustrator working independently. His inaugural Star Wars cover was for Claudia Gray's 2022 book, The High Republic: The Fallen Star, as well as the audiobook version. Scott Biel, a Senior Art Director at Penguin Random House, engaged Li for the Fallen Star cover and provided guidance. During the cover's creation, Li's boyfriend served as a reference model. Li described his work on the Fallen Star cover as "immensely challenging" due to the need for rapid revisions to numerous elements. He also mentioned his disappointment that the cover's original setting was substantially altered, but he ultimately believed it was the correct decision, as the final background enhanced the cover's "suggestive and distinctive" qualities.
Li also created the cover art for Zoraida Córdova's 2022 novel, The High Republic: Convergence, including the audiobook edition. The initial design was presented at Celebration Anaheim on May 26, 2022. The finished cover was released alongside the book on November 22 of the same year. In addition, Li designed the cover for the reference book Star Wars: The High Republic: Chronicles of the Jedi, which was released in the United States on March 21, 2023. He also contributed internal illustrations to the book. Li's fourth cover for the Star Wars franchise was for Lydia Kang's 2023 novel The High Republic: Cataclysm and its corresponding audiobook. This cover was unveiled at New York Comic Con on October 8, 2022, and the novel itself was published on April 4, 2023.
