Zophis crystals represented a specific kind of kyber crystal found on the planet of [Zoph], which resided within the Outer Rim Territories. A significant period prior to the Clone Wars, which saw conflict between the Galactic Republic and the Separatist Alliance, Padawans belonging to the Jedi Order journeyed to this Outer Rim planet to obtain Zophis crystals, seeking to fashion their own individualized lightsabers. Despite their capacity to effortlessly cut through durasteel armor, Jedi who implemented these crystals realized that the resulting blade possessed destructive and erratic qualities, stemming from the crystal's distinctive resonant attributes.
Nevertheless, as the Unknown Regions planet of Ilum, along with its kyber crystals, gained increased importance within the Jedi Order, the utilization and significance of Zophis crystals started to diminish. Subsequently, by the time of the Clone Wars, spanning from 22 BBY to 19 BBY, Zoph was under the control of the Separatists, rendering travel to the world dangerous for Jedi. However, even during the time of that war, certain lightsabers were still made using Zophis crystals, although they were incredibly uncommon, fetching prices of 11,000 credits.
The introduction of Zophis crystals occurred in Rise of the Separatists, a 2019 addition to the Star Wars Roleplaying line of items produced by Fantasy Flight Games.
