The Twenty-second, more formally known as the 22nd Air Combat Wing, was a combat wing composed of clone troopers that served within the Grand Army of the Republic. This unit participated in the Clone Wars, a conflict between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Notably, the clone commando squad known as Ion Team was assigned to the 22nd Air Combat Wing.
As the Clone Wars neared their conclusion, the 22nd Air Combat Wing relocated from the Mid Rim planet of Boz Pity to Murkhana, a planet situated in the Outer Rim Territories, in 19 BBY. While stationed on Murkhana, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine issued Order 66, commanding all clone troopers to eliminate the Jedi Order. In response, the Twenty-second ambushed and killed Jedi Master Saras Loorne along with two Jedi Knights.
Subsequently, Clone Commander Salvo informed Clone Captain Climber, the leader of Ion Team, about the Twenty-second's actions. Salvo's report included a sarcastic remark, implying that the unit did not see themselves as morally superior for having killed the Jedi, which was directed at Climber's ethical concerns regarding Order 66.
The "Twenty-second," which later became the 22nd Air Combat Wing, made its initial appearance in Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, a novel penned by James Luceno in 2005. The unit's complete official designation was subsequently established in the 2008 reference book The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, authored by Stephen J. Sansweet and Pablo Hidalgo.
