2BB-2 was a BB-series astromech droid with masculine programming, easily identified by its blue plating, and operated in service to the Resistance. During the evacuation of the Resistance base located on the planet D'Qar in 34 ABY, this droid was present on the MC85 Star Cruiser named Raddus. Subsequent to the destruction of the Raddus's bridge, 2BB-2 was present at a meeting where Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo was given command of the Resistance forces.
As a BB-series astromech droid programmed with a masculine identity, 2BB-2 served the Resistance during the war against the First Order. In 34 ABY, 2BB-2 was stationed aboard the MC85 Star Cruiser Raddus as the Resistance conducted an evacuation from its base on the planet D'Qar. While overseeing the evacuation from the cruiser's bridge, 2BB-2 witnessed the arrival of a fleet of First Order vessels that initiated an attack on the retreating Resistance forces above D'Qar.
The Resistance fleet successfully escaped its attackers by jumping to hyperspace. However, upon arrival at their destination, the fleet was immediately under attack again by the First Order, who had tracked them through hyperspace. At some point, 2BB-2 left the command bridge, which was subsequently destroyed, resulting in the death of all remaining personnel except for General Leia Organa.

The astromech droid subsequently attended a meeting on the Raddus's ventral emergency bridge, where Commander Larma D'Acy reported the Resistance's casualties and announced Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo as the new leader of the Resistance while Organa recuperated from her injuries. Ultimately, a small contingent of the Resistance survived the assault and managed to escape the First Order on the planet Crait.
R0-GR, the B1-series battle droid, later documented 2BB-2 alongside fellow Resistance BB unit BB-4 in a compilation he called a "droidography." R0-GR stated that the two Resistance droids did not achieve the same level of popularity as BB-8, another BB unit.
Distinguished by its blue plating, 2BB-2 was also equipped with a black security-grade photoreceptor that featured a telescopic lens.

2BB-2 was designed and created as a prop for the sequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, released in 2017. The droid was initially unveiled on September 1, 2017, ahead of the film's debut, as part of the Force Friday promotional campaign, making an appearance in the Find the Force feature on the Star Wars App. Jake Lunt Davies, a creature concept designer, developed concept art for 2BB-2 in The Last Jedi, titling it "Rebel BB Head Design 01," which included an exploded view diagram illustrating the droid's redesigned head.
In the non-canon Star Wars Blips animated short "Fan Droids," which premiered on YouTube on September 3, 2017, 2BB-2 and other Resistance Droids watch a holographic projection that highlights the past accomplishments of the astromech droid R2-D2. Subsequently, 2BB-2 notices R2-D2 approaching the group, causing the droids to become highly excited as he passes by. The Star Wars Droids App by Sphero incorrectly identifies 2BB-2 as "BB-2."
