A METOSP served as a specific kind of alert that the New Republic Space Ministry had the authority to disseminate. Through its Moddell Node and Sugai Subnode, the New Republic Space Ministry Firrerre Office put out a METOSP with a red level designation, called 558 ModSuFi; this was a warning to spacers to steer clear of approaching or landing on the planet Jakku, pointing to the dangerous conditions present on and around the world, along with the limited availability of services, commerce, and law enforcement provided by the inhabitants. Rey, a scavenger, came across a tangible version of the METOSP along the Pilgrim's Road located on Jakku, and she incorporated it into a survival guide that she had assembled.
Within the established Star Wars canon of today, a METOSP was incorporated within the 2015 replica journal titled Rey's Survival Guide, authored by Jason Fry. The concept of METOSPs initially appeared in the Star Wars Legends continuity; their initial mention occurred in The Star Wars Planets Collection by Bill Smith, which was a 1994 supplementary work for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game by West End Games.
