A Barve Like That: The Tale of Boba Fett

"A Barve Like That: The Tale of Boba Fett," penned by J.D. Montgomery, was featured in Tales from Jabba's Palace. Bantam Spectra released this anthology in December of 1995. The short story recounts Boba Fett's harrowing escape from the clutches of the sarlacc.

Plot summary

The narrative begins with Boba Fett regaining consciousness from within the sarlacc pit. He establishes a telepathic link, facilitated by the sarlacc itself, with Susejo, the sarlacc's initial victim. Subsequently, a series of flashbacks unfold, presenting glimpses of other individuals consumed by the sarlacc, including a pair of Corellians and a Jedi. Additional flashbacks provide details of Boba Fett's mission, including his delivery of the carbonite-encased Han Solo to Jabba.

Fett finds himself immobilized for a significant period inside the sarlacc, and his armor sustains considerable damage from the creature's digestive processes. He discovers that Susejo possesses a degree of influence over the sarlacc. By provoking Susejo, he induces the sarlacc to constrict around his jetpack. The subsequent explosion enables the bounty hunter to break free from the sarlacc's hold. Following his escape, he detonates concussion grenades against the interior wall of the creature, creating an opening. Boba Fett successfully flees the sarlacc, both he and the creature sustain severe injuries, though the sarlacc remains alive.

One year later, Fett makes his return to the sarlacc aboard the Slave II. Leveraging their previous connection, he reestablishes telepathic communication with Susejo. He decides to postpone the sarlacc's destruction, promising to return at a later time.

Continuity

The artwork accompanying this short story in The Essential Reader's Companion depicts Boba Fett with his left leg missing, lost within the sarlacc. However, this detail is absent from the story itself. In contrast, post–4 ABY sections of "The Last One Standing: The Tale of Boba Fett" describe him utilizing a prosthesis on his right leg, specifically below the knee, not his left. The Bounty Hunter Wars series and subsequent Legends materials make no mention of this discrepancy.

The confrontation between Fett and IG-88 was later depicted in both the Battle of the Bounty Hunters comic book and the Shadows of the Empire comic. Another version of the story, where Fett destroys IG-88B on Cloud City and then C and D during a dogfight above Tatooine, is recounted in "Therefore I Am: The Tale of IG-88."
