The Admonitor, a modernized Imperial-class Star Destroyer, functioned as the personal flagship and command vessel for Grand Admiral Thrawn of the Empire of the Hand within the Unknown Regions. As a capital ship of the Imperial Navy, Thrawn utilized the Admonitor while exploring and conquering the vast Unknown Regions on behalf of the Galactic Empire.

Dagon Niriz is recorded as the initial commander of the Admonitor. When Grand Admiral Thrawn received his assignment to the Unknown Regions, he embarked on this vessel, with his longtime colleague, Voss Parck, serving as its first officer.
One of the earliest encounters for the Admonitor during this mission involved Ebruchi pirates, a situation that Thrawn resolved with his usual efficiency.
Subsequently, the Admonitor made a brief return to the Galactic Empire to enable Thrawn's assistance to Darth Vader in the removal of Zekka Thyne, and therefore the influence of Black Sun, from Corellia.

It's probable that during this period, Thrawn participated in a space battle above Carida against crime lord Tyber Zann. Prince Xizor, the leader of Black Sun, orchestrated a meeting between Imperial contacts and Zann for the purpose of selling a Sith artifact to the Empire. Upon the arrival of Zann's freighter, it was intercepted by the Admonitor leading an Imperial fleet. Thrawn then double-crossed the crimelord by informing him of Xizor's demise and demanding the artifact in exchange for a swift and honorable death. Zann retaliated by ordering his nearby fleet to execute a short hyperspace jump into the system. Thrawn responded by firing a concealed hypervelocity gun on the planet's surface, destroying an Interceptor IV frigate. Subsequently, Zann deployed his new flagship, the Merciless, from hyperspace, initiating a fleet engagement. Shortly after, Zann was betrayed once more by his henchman Bossk, who pilfered the Sith artifact and escaped to the Admonitor aboard his ship, the Hound's Tooth. Thrawn, despite being outnumbered, secured his prize and retreated, leaving the remainder of his fleet to face defeat. However, Zann, anticipating this betrayal, had his lieutenant Urai Fen attach a homing beacon to the artifact, which eventually guided Zann to Palpatine's Museum on Coruscant.
During his tenure in the Unknown Regions, Thrawn and the Admonitor engaged in conflict with a largely primitive indigenous species. He discovered that a military commander from this species had created three wooden statues adorned with gemstone inlays, which had been acquired by Yarkora antiques dealer Saell-Terae. Thrawn, seeking to understand his adversary through their art, offered to purchase the artworks from Saell-Terae, but the Yarkora declined. Saell-Terae was eventually forced to flee from Thrawn's forces, abandoning his ship, the Lost Reef, with the statues still hidden onboard.
Following the battle on the planet Quethold and the death of Nuso Esva in 8 ABY, the Admonitor departed Quethold to address Esva's legacy within the Chaos Triangle of the Unknown Regions.
