The Dark Woman
The Dark Woman, formerly known as An'ya Kuro, was a Human female who relinquished her birth name to dedicate herself to the service of the Force. This enigmatic and highly respected Master within the Jedi Order during the tumultuous Clone Wars mentored various Force-sensitives who later achieved renown in the Jedi arts. Her most significant failure, however, lay in her inability to properly guide a female student named Aurra Sing, who subsequently became infamous as a ruthless slayer of Jedi. This failure prompted the Dark Woman to seek isolation on the planet Cophrigin V.
Later, answering the Force's call, the Dark Woman rejoined the Jedi Order to serve as a spy during the Clone Wars. As the Great Jedi Purge began, Kuro went into hiding, only to be discovered and ultimately defeated by Darth Vader.
Biography
Early life

Born a Force-sensitive Human, An'ya Kuro underwent rigorous training in the ways of the Force under the tutelage of the Jedi Order. Achieving the rank of Jedi Knight, she constructed a lightsaber that emitted a distinctive purple blade. Demonstrating unwavering commitment to the Force and the principles of the Jedi Code, Kuro took a radical step regarding attachments, shedding her given name and embracing the title of the Dark Woman, reportedly disliking close personal bonds. During her time as a Knight, Kuro traveled extensively throughout the galaxy, seeking out Force-sensitive children who might have been overlooked by the Republic's standard screening procedures. Working alongside the Order's Acquisition Division, one of Kuro's early successes involved locating a young Ki-Adi-Mundi on the planet Cerea.
While Kuro was in negotiations with the child's father at their family farm, a group of raiders arrived with the intention of stealing the family's harvest. Ki-Adi-Mundi was quickly hidden due to the special value placed on males on Cerea—the birth rate was twenty females to every male, and raiders were known to abduct young boys to raise as their own. Initially, the Dark Woman intended to confront the raiders, but the boy's father pleaded with her to refrain from intervening. He reasoned that even if the raiders were defeated at that moment, they would likely return for revenge after the Jedi had left. Understanding the situation, Kuro sheathed her lightsaber and observed the raid. As a result of this violent encounter, Ki-Adi-Mundi's father agreed to let his son leave with Kuro. The Dark Woman was encouraged to take the child away before the patriarch could change his mind. Returning to Coruscant with the Cerean child, Kuro successfully persuaded the Jedi High Council to permit Ki-Adi-Mundi to begin his training, despite his being older than the typical Jedi Initiates. Once he reached a suitable age, the High Council assigned Ki-Adi-Mundi to Master Yoda for his Jedi instruction, preventing the development of an emotional attachment between Kuro and the young Cerean.
Kuro employed unconventional and rigorous training methods that, despite their harshness, proved effective. Consequently, the High Council frequently entrusted her with challenging trainees. These methods often produced strong Jedi who retained a trace of Kuro's own inner darkness, as seen in her former Padawan Jon Antilles. However, the severe conditions she imposed on her students sometimes led to failure. At one point, Kuro discovered a Force-sensitive infant living in the slums of Nar Shaddaa. Kuro brought the child to Coruscant for training, where she was given the name Aurra Sing. Sing displayed aggressive tendencies, prompting the Council to assign her to Kuro as a "problem case." These efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, and by the age of nine, Sing had not yet reached the level of Padawan. While at Kuro's training facility on Ord Namurt Sing was kidnapped by space pirates who convinced the young Jedi that she was sold off by her master. Sing, who had never been close to Kuro, believed the lie. Thus began a lifelong grudge against the Jedi.
Exile and return

Feeling disheartened by Sing's fall, Kuro sought refuge on Cophrigin V to contemplate her role as a Jedi, her training techniques, and the future. In 32 BBY, after twelve years of seclusion, Kuro returned to Coruscant just as Ki-Adi-Mundi, now a renowned Jedi Knight, was preparing for a mission to Tatooine. Before his departure, Kuro cautioned her former Padawan to exercise extreme caution on Tatooine, as she had foreseen a looming darkness in her visions.
Kuro later engaged in a sparring match with Ki-Adi-Mundi's new Padawan, A'Sharad Hett, in a training room at the Jedi Temple. Hett insisted on receiving a lesson from Kuro before continuing his training. The Dark Woman launched a fierce assault on Hett, both with her lightsaber and with her words, attempting to provoke him. Hett maintained his composure, reciting passages from the Jedi Code, and ultimately passed Kuro's test.
Two years later, the assassination of two Jedi confirmed rumors of Sing's emergence as a Jedi-hunting assassin and bounty hunter. Kuro requested that the Jedi Council place her in charge of the hunt for her former Padawan, but her request was denied due to her personal connection to Sing. Instead, Ki-Adi-Mundi, A'Sharad Hett, and Adi Gallia were assigned to track down Sing and bring her to justice.
Unaware that Sing had been contracted to assassinate her, Kuro returned to Cophrigin V. The Jedi task force converged on Kuro's retreat just as Sing prepared to strike. Hett engaged Sing in combat and subdued the bounty hunter, but was forced to draw upon his anger to secure victory. Disturbed by the darkness he had witnessed within himself, Hett considered abandoning his Jedi training until Kuro offered to guide him in controlling his anger. As the Jedi prepared to depart with Sing in custody, a meteor shower struck their landing site, forcing a hasty retreat and leaving the assassin behind.
Clone Wars
Kuro accompanied Master Windu to Geonosis, where she participated in the starfighter battle against Captain Cavik Toth under the command of Adi Gallia. During the Clone Wars, Kuro chose to support the Republic as a spy rather than as a general. Working alongside Tholme and Aayla Secura, Kuro infiltrated Devaron to investigate reports of a Separatist base.
While on their mission, Kuro was spotted by Sing, who was on the planet to assassinate the Devaronian senator. Sing sprung a trap that trapped Tholme and Kuro beneath fallen rocks, but the young Secura managed to subdue Sing. The injured Jedi Masters received bacta treatments and returned to Coruscant.
Great Jedi Purge

As the Great Jedi Purge commenced and the Galactic Empire rose to power, Kuro sought sanctuary on Cophrigin V, where she cultivated a vast garden and lived as a recluse. When Kuro's hiding place was discovered by Mara Jade, an Emperor's Hand and one of Palpatine's personal assassins, Darth Vader arrived to personally kill the unorthodox Jedi Master. Following a brief exchange about extinction and evolution, Kuro acknowledged her impending fate but nevertheless engaged Vader in combat.
During their duel, Vader eventually toppled a massive tree onto Kuro, pinning her beneath it. With a swift strike of his lightsaber, he ended her life. As she merged with the Force, she told him he still had the potential to become Anakin once more. Enraged, Vader attempted to strike her Force ghost with his blade, but Kuro's presence simply vanished into the light of the Force.
Personality and traits

An'ya Kuro was known as an unconventional and mysterious Jedi Master. Her profound belief in the Jedi principle of humility led her to abandon her birth name and adopt the title Dark Woman. Kuro was renowned for training challenging or troubled Padawans, such as Aurra Sing and A'Sharad Hett. However, her teaching methods were harsh and, to some, unsettling. Her teaching methods most likely contributed to Aurra Sing's hatred of the Jedi Master.
Despite displaying some dark traits, such as her brutal training methods, she was still able to become a Force ghost after her death, indicating that, underneath her mysterious, unorthodox and at times brutal exterior, she was devoted to the light side of the Force. Kuro also believed that Darth Vader still had enough good in him to turn away from the dark side and her Force ghost even referred to him as Anakin, the name of the man he had once been.
Powers and abilities

An'ya Kuro was an exceptionally powerful Jedi, known for possessing a range of Force abilities that were uncommon among the Jedi, including the ability to control plant matter, and bend light around her to render herself invisible. She even appeared to be able to pass through solid objects. She also possessed the ability to use the Force to teleport. During the hunt for Aurra Sing, Kuro had additionally shown to possess an incredible talent for Force healing, being able to casually heal a misfired blaster wound almost instantly. Following her death, Kuro appeared before Darth Vader as a Force ghost.
Her lightsaber was particularly ornate, with an organic style to it, modified or perhaps built with artificial plant vines wrapping around it. Though emitting a purple blade throughout most of her career as a Jedi, Kuro briefly wielded a blue-bladed weapon during the Clone Wars before returning to her original lightsaber after the war. She proved capable of holding her own against Darth Vader in a lightsaber duel, despite her advanced age. She utilized several acrobatic maneuvers during the duel, which suggested she was possibly a practitioner of Ataru. Like Grand Master Yoda, her old age did not seem to limit her speed and dexterity, and at one point she even disarmed the Sith Lord, something very few other Jedi had been able to do. However, she had to ambush him to accomplish this. Kuro was also proficient in the use of Jar'Kai.
