As an integral part of these Sector Forces, the Aurora had the responsibility of safeguarding the planet Kuat's shipyards during 8.5 ABY. This period fell within the Galactic Civil War, a major conflict that pitted the Galactic Empire against the New Republic. Despite the protection offered by the Sector Forces, the New Republic successfully seized control of Kuat during the Taking of Kuat. Following this New Republic victory, Imperial operatives who had infiltrated Kuat activated the Aurora's hyperdrive, resulting in its destruction as it was sent hurtling into Kuat's sun.

During the Galactic Civil War, specifically in 8.5 ABY, the Aurora belonged to the Imperial-affiliated Kuati Sector Forces. This war saw the Galactic Empire fighting the New Republic for dominance over the galaxy. Commanded by Imperial Admiral Teren Rogriss, who had been dispatched from Orinda, the Imperial capital planet located in the Mid Rim, the Aurora and the rest of the Kuati fleet were assigned to defend the Core World of Kuat. Kuat was the location of Kuat Drive Yards, which served as a crucial shipyard for the Empire. The New Republic launched an attack on Kuat with the aim of securing its shipyards not long after the defeated warlord Zsinj.
The Republic RZ-1 A-wing interceptors belonging to Surprise Squadron eliminated the battlecruiser Luminous along with three Star Destroyers by using their ion weaponry. Simultaneously, a virus caused the battlecruiser Event Horizon and five destroyers to turn on the rest of the fleet. Faced with an enemy capable of destroying nine warships in a matter of minutes, Kuati officials were compelled to surrender. This surrender came after Republic representative Ral'Rai Muvunc revealed that the New Republic held thirty-four percent of Kuati shares, and also informed them of the Republic Mon Calamari Star Cruisers that could arrive in the system in a short amount of time. The Republic permitted Rogriss to give up command of the Aurora and return to Orinda with his crew. Shortly after the battle concluded, undercover Imperial agents activated the Aurora's hyperdrive, resulting in its destruction as it plunged into Kuat's sun.
Imperial Admiral Terren Rogriss, dispatched from the Imperial-controlled Orinda system to Kuat, was in command of the Aurora. His command continued until the Empire's loss at Kuat, at which point Rogriss and his crew were given permission to retreat back to Orinda, leaving the Aurora behind at Kuat.
