BB-2 Starfire fighter-bomber

The BB-2 Starfire fighter-bomber served as the principal bomber for the Galactic Alliance throughout the Sith–Imperial War. Later, it continued in service with the Galactic Alliance Remnant during the subsequent Second Imperial Civil War. This versatile and streamlined starfighter, manufactured by the SoroSuub Corporation, required a crew of three. Its armaments included several warhead launchers, a forward-mounted laser cannon, and defensive turrets.

Characteristics

This sleek and gently curved hyperdrive-equipped BB-2 Starfire fighter-bomber, produced by the SoroSuub Corporation, boasted formidable weaponry. The starship's primary offensive capability resided in its multiple warhead launchers. The BB-2 carried a payload consisting of ten interceptor missiles, numerous proton torpedoes capable of being launched in two rapid, massive volleys, and three ion bombs. It was also capable of deploying proton bombs and other types of explosive ordnance. Complementing these were a pair of forward-facing laser cannons and dorsal turrets on each wing, armed with either light laser cannons or small anti-fighter missile launchers.

While not as agile as the Galactic Alliance's CF9 Crossfire starfighter, the Starfire possessed comparable speed, thanks to its two powerful engines. These engines also supplied energy to the craft's dual shield generators. The Starfire's three-person crew consisted of a pilot, a co-pilot, and a gunner, and the craft could sustain them with a week's supply of consumables. Although all crew members could operate the weapons systems, the pilot typically controlled the forward laser cannon. The pilot could launch missiles and proton torpedoes, but with less accuracy than the co-pilot. The co-pilot could also take control of the forward laser cannon or a turret, but their primary responsibility was managing the barrage and bombing systems. The gunner could operate either turret independently or both simultaneously at the same time.

A new Starfire cost 200,000 credits, while a used one cost 90,000 credits; it was exclusively available to military organizations. It could reach speeds of 1,200 kilometers per hour within a planet's atmosphere and transport ninety kilograms of cargo. The ship was equipped with a Class 1 hyperdrive.

Role

The BB-2 Starfire's main function as a bomber was to attack enemy capital ships and space stations using a rapid succession of missile and proton torpedo launches. During the Sith–Imperial War, the Galactic Alliance's standard tactic involved launching multiple salvos from maximum range, followed by a return to their carrier to rearm. These tactics were later adjusted to conserve valuable ordnance. The revised approach involved closing in on enemy targets to ensure direct hits. During the Second Imperial Civil War, Alliance BB-2 pilots relied on the craft's robust shielding to survive these close-quarters engagements. They were frequently accompanied by a squadron of CF9 Crossfire starfighters for protection against enemy starfighters.

History

Throughout the Sith–Imperial War, the BB-2 Starfire served as the primary bomber of the Galactic Alliance Navy. Following the Battle of Caamas in 130 ABY, it continued to serve within the Galactic Alliance Remnant fleet.

Behind the scenes

The BB-2 Starfire fighter-bomber was initially referenced in the Legacy Era Campaign Guide, which was published in 2009. Within the Legacy Era Campaign Guide, the starship was once mistakenly identified as a Torrent instead of a Starfire.
